Unique things to do in Mexico City

Book unforgettable activities hosted by locals on Airbnb.

Travel like a local

Few major cities are as beautifully complex as Mexico City. To decide on the endless things to do in Mexico City, start by taking the time to embrace its contrasts: Do a Michelin-star restaurant and a street food walking tour on the same day. Enjoy Museo Frida Kahlo then go find emerging artists in the Roma neighborhood. Meet the locals behind the lucha libre masks (really). Take time for tours and activities that go beyond the famous sights — and sounds, and tastes — with Airbnb Experiences.

Most Authentic Mexico City's Street Food!
Join me on this experience and explore the gastronomic scene of chaotic Mexico City, where you will learn about the history and present of the tasty street food available in every corner of the city while we taste the iconic flavors that have captivated local palates for decades. During our journey you will feel immersed in the daily life of Mexicans, as I will show you how the city's most used public transportation works and its importance within the local lifestyle. On the other hand, we will visit two essential markets of the city and wander through its colorful aisles where fruits, vegetables, chiles, traditional sweets, exotic ingredients, spices and flowers from all over Mexico abound. During the experience we will stop at different street food stalls located inside these traditional markets, as well as in the streets of the Historical Center and we will enjoy more than 14 tastings, among them the peculiar way of eating tamales in Mexico City, moles, seasonal fruits, fresh tortillas, tacos, edible insects (optional) and churros. If you would like to join me on this adventure don't forget to come hungry! For more availability you can visit Hungry Nomads Mexico.

Lunch will be alongside the river (weather permitting). Cave Exploration: Finally, you will see awe-inspiring waterfalls and unexpected adventure that our guests have described as “life changing.” We will head out by 5:30PM arriving between 9-10:30PM, full of new experiences and photos to share with envious family/friends. Cerámica y chelas

We provide you with everything you need: 3 different types of clay (stoneware, Oaxacan clay, Zacatecan clay), sculpting tools, glazes, and other ceramic toots. If you are unhappy we will decide on a case-by-case basis to resolve this as customer satisfaction is our biggest priority. Send us a message anytime, we are happy to answer your questions :)

Heart opening hiking with cacao

What Mexico City has to offer

Live Lucha Libre night with a real fan
1) We'll meet up in a convenient location for you in the Roma/Condesa/Juarez area. 2) Taco dinner nearby: I recommend this BEFORE we go to the Arena (but if you'd rather after, that's possible)! I'll take you to a popular taco spot and we'll have a bite & drink together. 3) We'll then head to Arena México and have time to see the masks. I'll help you bargain for one if you like, and I'll start to explain the basics of Lucha Libre so you know what we're about to see and do. 4) We'll head in and watch the show together! Please note not all tours offered on this site actually go in with you but I do and comment throughout so you can appreciate what's going on! I'll also teach you the right chants so you can really get in on the action! 5) Optional Fridays: If you're up for it, I invite you to add on a bonus activity (no extra cost!) which is going to Patrick Miller nightclub afterwards. This is a unique Mexico City gem! It involves high-energy music (similar to 80s style) and dancing in a really special scene. I'll explain and guide you so you can get the most out of seeing the amazing dance circles, hard core "Patricio" fans and if you're brave enough, even join in the dancing! Other things to note Lucha libre is more a show than fighting so don't worry about it being too violent. In fact, this experience is very family friendly! If you prefer a partying vibe, I recommend Patrick Miller after!

After we meet, we'll take a trip to the local market to buy ingredients and learn more about Mexican spices and food. Then we'll return to my family home, where you will learn how to marinate the meat for the tacos. You will prepare red salsa, green salsa, and guacamole, and make your own tortillas on the traditional Mexican "comal"—a smooth, flat griddle. At the end, we'll put everything together to make the tacos, sit and enjoy what you have prepared, and learn a little more about Mexican gastronomy. Other things to note We will give you the recipe at the end of the class. You can take the class in English, Spanish, or French. We can also offer a chicken and a vegetarian version.

Your guide to Mexico City

Where do locals hang out in Mexico City?

In a city with a population larger than New York City, you can’t easily pinpoint where CDMX locals congregate, let alone what they like to do. However, you can expect to find a lively nightlife scene in the Centro Histórico district, a relaxing afternoon in Parque México (people love biking here), and shopping at the artisan San Ángel market (aka Bazar del Sábado). Sharing most parts of the city is inevitable, but locals can still feel moved by places such Plaza de la Constitución, also known as Zócalo.

What do locals eat in Mexico City?

This is an international city that attracts some of the brightest culinary talents from across the world. With that comes an overwhelming list of options. Get grounded by joining locals on food experiences that range from high-end dining to heartwarming home cooking. Here are some ideas to get you started.

Make tacos al pastor with a local chef (and more)

Learn how to marinate the meat, prepare the salsas, and pick the best ingredients for this household favorite. Take a churro-making class with a pro chef. Make mole with a local who shares the history, legends, and more of this ancient dish. Hungry yet?

Sip mezcal on the Xochimilco canals

Hop aboard a colorful trajinera (a painted, flat-bottom boat) with a mariachi band and your expert guide to enjoy a smooth ride along the canals. Along the way, expect to try special family recipes, sip on mezcal and tequila, and enjoy the scenery which includes chinampas (man-made islands).

Enjoy a lucha libre and taqueria night

Join a group of local friends as your guides, who take you to their favorite taquerias before a night of a favorite local pastime: watching lucha libre, an entertaining spectacle of wrestling deeply associated with Mexico City.

Take a food tour of the markets

Try different types of mole, Mexican fruits, vegetables, tlacoyos, gorditas, and plenty more in places including La Merced Market.

Cover (and eat) more on a bike tour

Travel through the neighborhoods of Polanco, Condesa or Roma on two wheels. The quest is simple, and delicious: Find the best tacos in the city with a connoisseur of the beloved food.

What are the best day trips from Mexico City?

Explore Teotihuacan and its pyramids

Just about an hour’s drive from Mexico City sits what was once the largest urban center of Mesoamerica before the Aztecs. Walk the Avenue of the Dead to see the talud-tablero architectural style, admire the Pyramid of the Sun, and the Pyramid of the Moon, and hear the history from a Teotihuacan native firsthand. Other experiences to look out for include a meal with a local family.
