Woodstock Historic Artist Estate - The Pond House
Awaken to an idyllic view of trees through timber-framed picture windows. Acclaimed social realist painter Reginald Marsh's family estate is known to be unique for Woodstock with its ball shaped junipers, a pond that brackets the house, expansive lawns, a gathering of birches and 100 year old cone shaped cedar trees. Today the former artist studio of the estate is an architect-renovated gem most recently featured at Icon Design Magazine Italy. The setting with a private waterfall bordering public preserves, as well as the attention to architectural detail is unique.
If you want to fall asleep to the stereo lullaby of frog croaks while watching the spectacle of fireflies competing with stars, this is the place.
Frederick Dana Marsh, father of the well known Social Realist painter Reginald Marsh, married Mabel Van Alstyne in 1930, starting a notable artistic partnership as the Van Alstyne Marsh Collection that was later acquired by the Smithsonian Institution. Their home was unique for Woodstock—'It was in the background of the Mona Lisa; a Van Gogh landscape; a train ride through Tuscany—ball shaped junipers; a pond that bracketed the house; expansive lawns; a gathering of birches. But most of all, big cone shaped cedar trees. It is a marvelous thing to look up at backlit clouds at sunset—see the intrusion of cedar peaks, pointing up like soft missles and the erratic flight of mosquito catcher bats making ninety degree turns down the channels between the trees. A photographer friend was here last weekend and I told her, “Don't worry about framing the picture, just point and shoot. The landscaper framed it for you seventy years ago." ' Here I quote Austin Metze, who knows this piece of land long before it put a spell on us.
To be there is to inhabit an idyllic painting. Start the day with breakfast under the hydrangea trees while goslings and blue heron comb the waters. Sit in the property's own Hidden Chair Waterfall or chill at the secluded sandy beach swim hole a one minute stroll away through enchanted woods, take a hike up Milk Mountain or up the trails of the neighboring nature preserve for a Sunday brunch in town and visit to the flea market. Or just hang in the birch hammock and read a good book under a cypress tree.
THE POND HOUSE HAS UNDERGONE MAJOR RENOVATION. There are reviews from before renovation, as well as from 2016 when certain interior details were not yet finished. It is the 1930' Reginald Marsh artist studio building with 16' ceiling height and tall artist studio windows. It is an architect's home with a lot of attention to architectural detail, in a unique setting. As of 2017 interior renovation is complete, yet certain exterior details are not yet finished.
There are 3 bedrooms, the master bedroom overlooking the pond with floor to ceiling windows on three sides. The master bedroom is open to the staircase with a kid's room adjacent. The queen-size bedroom is next to the bathroom downstairs, adjacent to the pond with a glass facade and sliding doors to the staircase and bathroom. It's a very special junior room, with deer walking by the glass facade a few feet from the bed. You can watch ducks, herons, muskrats and other wildlife straight from bed, you will not be disappointed with the summer soundscape of this idyllic spot.
The house comes with central A/C, an open floor plan, large architectural windows with sun light flooding in. If you travel with a child we can provide high-chair, crib, stair gate, baby bathtub upon request.
The Pond House is on the same property as the Cottage House, see last photo for aerial view and http://www.airbnb.com/rooms/284669. The grounds and pond surrounding the Pond House are reserved for the Pond House. The Pond House feels very private, since two sides of the property are bordering preserves.
House will be open from 2pm on.
The Pond House is set beside a pond and millstream, with a private swimming hole and waterfall. It's walking distance to Woodstock by woodland trails, yet is secluded thanks to surrounding preserves including the grounds of the Woodstock Riding Club.
10min to Woodstock Village Green bus stop. Either walk through woods of Comeau property, or street.
Idyllic, secluded setting bordering a public preserve, in short walking distance to the center of Woodstock. Two rental houses are separated by the main house, facing away from each other ensuring privacy. No other house is visible from inside the Pond House with its own designated back yard facing the pond. The swim hole is shared with the Carriage House, with a second, larger swim hole a short stroll through the woods away. An outdoor day bed overviews the legendary Indian Head mountain ridge.
