The space
Known as the Butterfly Mountains, the Sierra do Japi represents one of the last areas of continuous forest in the state. One of the few mountains in the country listed by the Historic Heritage, the Sierra do Japi is now considered by UNESCO as a Biosphere Reserve – a world preservation area recognized by the UN. In 1983, Serra was listed by the State as an Environmental Protection Area of Serra do Japi (APA).

About 60 km from São Paulo, the Serra do Japi is one of the few remaining points of Atlantic Forest still existing in the interior of São Paulo, with a total extension of about 350 square km, of which 191.70 square km correspond to the listed area, covering the municipalities of Jundiaí, Cabreúva, Cajamar and Pirapora do Bom Jesus. As a meeting area between Atlantic Forest and Plateau Forest, the Sierra do Japi presents an enormous richness in terms of biodiversity.

the FLORA OF SERRA DO JAPI

There are more than 300 species of native trees, such as aroeiras, uvaias, pitangas, ipês, etc. There is a large amount of shrubs, herbaceous plants, ferns and bromeliads, orchids, large trees and flowers of the most varied colors, shapes and perfumes, providing visitors with a beautiful natural spectacle. This flora, in addition to its beauty, has an enormous scientific and medicinal potential that is gradually being unveiled.

The FAUNA OF SERRA DO JAPI IS

very diverse containing numerous species, many threatened with extinction. We have several species of birds such as jacutingas (there are more than 50 free on the site), woodpeckers, bem-te-vis, hawks, juritis and hummingbirds. Among the mammals we highlight bats, howler monkeys, monkey-sauas, hedgehogs, deer, ocelots and suçuaranas. There is also a wide variety of insects, reptiles, amphibians and arachnids.

The WATERS OF SERRA DO JAPI

There are several springs throughout the mountains, forming many streams and also beautiful waterfalls on all sides, they are small but very refreshing falls, with their crystal-clear and pure water. We can mention some watercourses such as the Moses stream, the Ermida and Caguaçu stream and the Caxambu stream.

The PATHS OF JAPI

In the region of Jundiaí we have three entrances to Serra. We have the entrance of Santa Clara, Malota and Eloy Chaves, being only the entrance of Santa Clara of free access, because the others are in areas of environmental protection and the entrance for visitation is restricted, only with accompaniment of guides it is possible to enter. But it's where the most beautiful landscapes of the mountains are, so it's worth getting to know them.
