The space
Welcome to JX Ranch Bunkhouse - a short 30 minute (20 miles highway plus 2.5 miles of ranch road) drive from Tucumcari and I-40 / old Route 66, New Mexico.
Located on this 7,000-acre cattle ranch, you are assured privacy, peace and quiet away from the noise and lights of town. Here you can enjoy the stars on clear nights, and nature around the JX Ranch Bunkhouse, built by early settlers around 1900 and was the original Homestead. While we have done some remodeling, we have tried to leave it as original as possible; it is not fancy, but very rustic and cozy! Bring slippers; the old wood-floors are cold in the winter-time, hard year-round.
The Bunkhouse consists of two separate rooms, each with its own entrance, kitchen, bedroom and bathroom. They have a connecting door that is locked when rented individually and left open when the Whole Bunkhouse is rented.
The Longhorn Room is the larger of the two rooms. It features the original rock fire-place, three twin beds, an antique wagon-wheel sofa and rocker, books and magazines, a kitchen area with all your basic cooking needs, and a bathroom with a claw-foot tub used as a shower.
The adjoining smaller Cow Camp Room has two twin beds, a wagon-wheel sofa and rocking chair, a kitchen and bathroom with a shower.
In the evening, you can watch the wild turkey as they prepare to roost in the hackberry trees in canyon below the Bunkhouse as well as on the power lines! You may see a doe with her fawn on their way to water, or a busy roadrunner scooting by with the day's catch in his mouth. You may also get to see our cattle, depending on which pasture they are in on the ranch. They will take you back to the time of the trail drives, one of which - the famous Goodnight-Loving Trail - went through the ranch and right past where the Bunkhouse is located. The old trail is perfect for an evening or early-morning hike. At dusk, coyotes call to each other across the canyons and ridges. On a cloudless night, the star-filled sky will take your breath away! Always watch where you go, and in the summers keep an eye open for rattlesnakes. Stay on cleared trails and avoid walking through thick brush.
You will find your kitchen stocked with coffee, tea, sugar and dry creamer. In addition, we provide seasoning, flour, salt & pepper, cooking spray, olive oil and vegetable oil for your other cooking needs. You are welcome to bring food staples and prepare your own meals - the kitchen is equipped with a two-burner electric cook-top, microwave oven, coffee maker, toaster, small refrigerator and a mini-grill. You will find basic cooking utensils - pots and pans, dishes, plates etc. Please do not use metal utensils for the frying pans or pots, use the plastic ones provided and clean up after you. You will find some chairs and table outside the Bunkhouse and a charcoal grill and charcoal to use weather permitting (if too windy, no grilling due to fire danger).
We raise and sell all-natural grass-fed and grass-finished beef (no growth-hormones or antibiotics), dry-aged 2-3 weeks! We have steaks and hamburger meat available for purchase (cash only). Let us know ahead of time if you want some for your dinner so we can start thawing them for you. Bring a cooler if you would like to purchase some beef to take with you (cash only).
Tucumcari, in its wildest days, was named “Six Shooter Siding”. You will find many restaurants and famous Route 66 Icons and spectacular murals. Lowe's is the only grocery store - go north on Exit 332 to light, turn left and Lowe's is two blocks down on your right. Come back same way and stay on 209.
The small town offers two museums - the Historical Museum and the Dinosaur Museum. Two lakes are within an hour's drive of the ranch; Ute Lake (45 minutes) and Conchas Lake (1 hour) offer boating and fishing. The Billy the Kid Museum in Fort Sumner is an hour's drive, and Palo Duro Canyon with the "must see" and entertaining Texas Play in the summer, is two hours away.
Tucumcari is located on I-40, approximately 180 miles east of Albuquerque, NM and 110 miles west of Amarillo, TX. We are 20 miles south of Tucumcari on State Highway 209, plus 2.5 miles off the highway. Please see directions.
