Where you’ll be

Baba Stana, Lovec, Bulgaria

Near the Troyan Monastery is located a small and picturesque village- the neighborhood of Baba Stana. The Mahalata is located near the village of Oreshak, Troyan municipality, in a picturesque area at the foot of the mountain. It is located under an overgrown mound with forests, in a small slope with springs. Preserved old houses of the Revival style can be seen. Here is a new Christian temple built by John Brisby. He is royal adviser to Elizabeth II and grandson of the richest Bulgarian – Konstantin Hadzhikalchev. Konstantin's father, Calcio Drenski, was born in the Baba Stana neighbourhood. John Brisby continues his ancestors' charitable tradition in the Trojan region. Every year, the schools in Troyan are awarded the John Brisby Awards to thebest students. Mahalata Baba Stana was created by a widow named Stana. She and her twelve children – 6 girls and 6 boys - moved from the town of Troyan to the area where the neighbourhood is currently located. At that time, there were many robberies and outrages of the Turks in the city, which were particularly dangerous for women and children. In earlier times, transgressions were committed by crusaders. According to doctors and scientists at the time, syphilis emerged, carried by the crusaders on their journey to Jerusalem. To avoid the terrible disease, Stava moved to live in a remote area deep in the forest. Thus, when the time comes for the neighbourhood to be named as a larger settlement, the name Baba Stana is chosen.
How do you get to us? If you are travelling from Troyan to the Troyan Monastery, the turnoff is on the left almost at the end of Oreshaka. First turnoff to the left after the Kaiser Tavern. From there, through a narrow and well-paved road through the forest, you arrive in 3 minutes.
