Where you’ll be

Memphis, Tennessee, United States

The Evergreen Historic District is in the middle of pretty much everything. The house is a quick 4 min. drive to the hopping Overton Square Entertainment District; 7 mins. to the Cooper Young neighborhood (more restaurants, shops, character included); 5 mins. to Sun Records - one of the birthplaces of rock and roll, where Elvis, Johnny Cash, Carl Perkins, Jerry Lee Lewis, B.B. King, Ike Turner, and others recorded; 10 mins. to the renowned Beale Street - 150 years of the world’s best blues; 11 minutes to the Stax Museum of American Soul Music, NBA basketball, baseball stadium, and Smithsonian affiliate: the National Civil Rights Museum. Another “don’t miss” south from downtown: your soul may be saved by soul-music-legend-turned-Bishop Al Green at his fabulous Full Gospel Tabernacle Church. An 18 min. drive, and wear your dancing shoes. (But you'll be put to shame by an 80-year-old.)

There's more. It’s just 6 mins. to the Broad Ave. District with art galleries, very interesting shops and restaurants, outdoor concerts and yet more character; 6 mins. to downtown Memphis with dozens of restaurants, a jaw-dropping 60-story pyramid on the river (really - alligators and fudge, what more could you want?), and the South Main arts District; the beautiful Brooks Art Gallery is a mile away in Overton Park (1901), a huge and fantastic city park with an old growth forest (yes, trails), golf course, the Memphis Zoo, a bark-park, and a Metal museum with metal-working (will be opening); a 13 min. drive to amazing Graceland; 15 to the airport.

Even at just the end of our block is a nice restaurant with patio service (Ecco), with a few more steps to Atomic Tiki. (Might be good for what ails you.) And a very good car repair shop, even.

Go north on Avalon to get there, and you'll know if you went south instead, because you'll be in a car wash.

I am your primary host. Was a teacher, still do so p/t now, have been in Memphis almost 25 years, and am in the process of becoming an Airbnb magnate. I am sure it will be fabulous due to the charming and tasteful guests who would choose our site. Like to travel, so also like meeting people from different places if you’re interested in a chat, but it's also perfectly fine if your vacation is an escape from people for a bit. We invite guests from all walks of life, and I suppose the thing I wouldn't want to live without would be chocolate.

Mark does software project management and his primary interest is the cosmos. He would give an arm for a trip on a rocket going anywhere in outer space. Personally, the only way you would get me on a rocket is unconscious. Also, please feel welcome to stop Mark with a question or something you need, or if you can’t get me on the phone. He’s very amiable. We’re both originally from Iowa, where amiability is required, and have lived other places since.
