The space
Escape to the not-so-remote Wadmalaw Island in your private, cozy bedroom, perfect for the adventurous traveler or the vacationer looking to unwind close to Chuck Town! Complete with a mini-fridge, microwave, and a Keurig, this retreat features super-soft bedding, crisp white sheets, fuzzy blankets, fluffy towels, a luxurious marble bathroom, a smart TV and wi-fi, and a writing desk perfect for capturing your travel memories or starting your best-selling explorer novel.

Swim in our pool overlooking the intracoastal waterway, or soothe your muscles in our hot tub after a long day of visiting all the historic sites of Charleston. If you prefer to lie low, kayak with dolphins in the river out back, or laze the day away in a hammock on our wrap-around porch, with fans, a fountain, ferns, and windchimes. Settle in for the evening with a bonfire, while the spoonbills, swallow-tailed kites, wood storks, and whimbrels fly over, going home to roost. Not enough Zen? Watch the incredible sunset off our dock with a chilled rosé. Our home is truly an escape, and we know you’ll love every moment.

Your room is private with an ensuite bath and its own entrance. It includes all the essentials: coffee, tea, sweeteners, and creamers; a hair dryer; bath and pool towels; and extra toiletries including the “South Carolina Essentials” of bug spray and sunscreen!
Your room is large! If you’re traveling with friends, we have an air mattress that’ll fit in this oversized room so your group of 4 can fit in the space.
Need bikes or beach chairs? If we’re not using them, you can!
If you’re traveling with a group and would like a true, southern dining experience (oyster roast, lowcountry boil), let us know—I’m sure we could be convinced.

Our island is a 30-minute drive-under-the live oaks and over the creeks to downtown Charleston. We’re 15 minutes from historic Rockville at the end of the island (think the movie, The Notebook), where you can find sweet shrimp fresh off the boat and a cute grocery (run by a trained chef and an artist) offering hot dog lunches and local crafts and veggies. On the way to Charleston, stop at the 400-year-old Angel Oak, just 15 minutes away, or head to Kiawah Island, a peaceful 25 minute drive, for a secluded beach day or world-famous golf.

We're out of town frequently, but when we're home, we're happy to give you tips, grill out, hang out, or give you space. Feel free to use the communal indoor spaces: our laundry room with all goodies; our well-stocked kitchen; or our living room with expansive views of the river and big skies.

Friendly pets are welcome, but we don't have a fenced yard.

Amenities:
• Private bedroom with ensuite bath, private entrance with coded access, and all the things you’d expect: smart tv, wi-fi, desk, bathrobes, iron and ironing board, bath and beach towels, toiletries, hair dryer, a first aid kit, and a fire extinguisher
• Access to communal interior living spaces including the living room and the fully-stocked kitchen and laundry room
• Pool
• Hot Tub
• Dock
• Deck with dining area
• Kayaks
• Porch
• Grill
• Large yard for bonfires and games (croquet, kubb, bocci, cornhole)

Full Disclosure:
• Other guests may be staying at the home, but your bedroom has a lock with a code specific to you and your stay. We also love to entertain, so it’s not uncommon for our friends to be here. We are social, but respectful.
• Our grounds are a work in progress: We began renovations on this home three years ago, and while the interior and all the “fun things” (pool, hot tub) are good to go, we still have some landscaping to do, so please excuse our projects! Some weekends, we may have people working at the house, but we always prioritize your privacy and experience!
• We live in the country. A) This means that sirens are scarce but gunshots are a part of a normal day. Sometimes our neighbors target practice. Please know, this is a close-knit, island community, and we all trust each other. We are safe! Don’t be alarmed, but if this will bother you, consider staying elsewhere. B) The wi-fi isn’t great, but the sunsets are! Fiber will be coming soon, but for now, our wi-fi is fine for work or streaming. C) Our chickens are free-range, and so is our neighbor’s dog. If you’re afraid of either, please reconsider. Just know that you’ll be greeted by a Boykin Spaniel begging for belly rubs and possibly yard birds hoping for treats. D) It’s easy to get a ride-share to our house; not so much from our house. If this is an issue, let us know in advance, and we’ll do our best to help you navigate the . . . navigation :)

Where you’ll be

Wadmalaw Island, South Carolina, United States

Wadmalaw Island is a small, rural island nestled between the Wadmalaw River and Bohickit Creek. Rich in nature and history, the island is known for not being known for much at all. It’s not uncommon to encounter deer, foxes, and turkeys, and the surrounding waterways are teeming with oysters, shrimp, red fish, and dolphins. There are few commercial establishments: no gas stations, restaurants, or retail shops, and the only shopping is a small, locally run country store close to Cherry Point landing. “Civilization” is a mere 13 minutes away, and bustling downtown Charleston is a quick 30 minute drive through lovely neighborhoods. If you’re looking for the immersive, untouched Lowcountry, look no further.

Hello! Paul and I are South Carolina natives who live on Wadmalaw Island, just 30 minutes from beautiful downtown Charleston, SC. We've spent the past few years renovating our home and growing our businesses, but we love travel and meeting new people. Air BNB is the perfect way to accomplish this! Paul's a fine arts painter and he is also a partner in a construction company. I work from home for an academic publisher, which I love, as it gives me the flexibility to work from anywhere. We enjoy good food, good wine, and good company. We love animals--especially dogs and chickens--and we think the best way to explore a new place is on foot. We like to cook, read, go to art shows, beach it, and generally get out and about as much as possible. When we're not going out, we like to binge series, learn cooking tips on YouTube, tend to our house and chickies, and have friends and family over for meals, games, or relaxation by the water.
