This newly converted loft in an outbuilding has made a cosy nest sleeping 2. A bed-sitting room with kitchenette and shower, it's situated in lovely countryside and looks out over a valley to the hills beyond. The area has multiple walks and rides and is convenient for the many sights and amenities of Central Southern England. The pod is perfect for singles or couples wanting to be in the area for a while and, because it is small, it's ideal for those spending most of the time out and about.

The space
This is the loft of a detached outbuilding in a beautifully situated smallholding high in the Wessex Downs Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Great views and peace in lovely countryside. Ideal for holiday breaks, walkers or cyclists, or business travellers. Walking/cycling right from the doorstep. Dogs welcome. Handy for M4 & A303, Hungerford, Newbury, Marlborough, Salisbury, Swindon, Andover, Winchester, Basingstoke, etc.

In the 19th century, our house next door was a pub called The Bluebell Inn: in early spring, the woods nearby are a sea of blue, so that is doubtless how the pub got its name. The pub was a Drovers' Inn, probably medieval, and is situated on the route of a Roman road, unusually winding its way around a steep valley. We're in a wonderful rural situation, remote but convenient for many of the amenities and destinations in central southern England.

The Loft Pod is private and peaceful. It is situated within a courtyard of other outbuildings (including a larger Airbnb space) and accessed through a shared workshop / utility room (garage) which we use for storage etc and which we'll need to access occasionally. We will be your neighbours and we potter around the grounds, sometimes the gardener comes, and there are comings and goings with the horses &c. If you don't want to bump into anyone during your stay, this is not the place for you.

We started calling this space The Hobbit House because it has sloping ceilings which mean the head room is limited: while we have nothing against giants, this space is better suited to dwarves like us who are more vertically-challenged! There is, to be fair, plenty of room to move around and it's cleverly organised to make the most of the space. Access is up a narrow, slightly steep staircase approached through a shared utility room & workshop; there's a washing machine, tumble dryer and freezer there for you to use. Please note - this 'garage' space is shared with us (but used for storage, not as a garage); once up the stairs you have your own front door with lock and key. Although a studio "apartment", the property has a spacious feel being about 40 sq m in floor area. The eaves house lots of storage and - caution! - there’ll be many a time when you get something out of a cupboard and bump your head.

There are 2 single beds - one is 3' (90 cm) while the other is 2"6" (75 cm). These are specially and individually built loft beds - that is to say, they have very short legs and sit close to the floor. We arrange these beds as a large double-bed sleeping with your toes under the eaves and with a 5 cm gap between the mattresses. They can be parted easily enough by a few more inches to make two singles. Either way, the two beds have to be made up singly. There's enough space for a travel cot which we can provide on request, subject to your inspection and approval.

Well-equipped kitchenette with sink, fridge and limited cooking facilities - 2-ring hob and microwave/oven/grill combination. Sitting area with small sofa & TV. There's an adjustable height table - morphs from coffee table to dining table to desk.

No bath - but a small shower room. Mains pressure shower.

Heating: storage heater with daytime boost.

From this description, the reader will no doubt have formed the impression that the place is best suited to folk who have good agility. Probably not for someone who wants to be inside all day - an enhanced glamping experience is what's on offer - and we think it's great for singles or couples needing a base in the area for work or leisure.

Wi-Fi relies on a mobile signal brought in via an external antenna. Not fast, although it seems to be sufficient. Mobile signals are otherwise dodgy - you'll probably get a couple of bars at the window. We recommend Wi-Fi calling, but as this installation is new, we can't guarantee what works. As far as we can see, iPlayer on the TV (for example) works fine.

Long lets considered. Or regular weekday or weekend lets. (please ask)

Riders - use of stable & paddocks (by arrangement). Cycle storage by arrangement.

Edward's a classical musician & composer. Rachel is a medical doctor and a keen horse rider. Daughter Nelly is a young professional about town. We have enjoyed getting our property ready for airbnb guests. Our style is simple and unfussy. Like us, really.

We also enjoy meeting new folks, guests here and also on our travels: we've made good friends on continental rail journeys and our experiences with other airbnb hosts have been great!
