Where you’ll be

Centro, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

The Center of Rio de Janeiro is a neighborhood with easy access to transportation, such as the subway that connects the beaches of the South Zone, such as Copacabana, Ipanema, Barra da Tijuca among others, connection with Cristo Redentor, and Maracanã.

In the Center, there are some famous monuments and buildings, such as the Odeon Cinema, the Municipal Theater, the Mestre Valentim Fountain, the Tiradentes Palace - seat of the state deputies chamber, the Duque de Caxias Palace, the National Library of Brazil (founded by Dom João VI), the Central Metro and Train Station and many others that stand out in the historical, architectural and cultural landscape of Rio de Janeiro. It currently has 23 museological institutions, leading the list of neighborhoods in Rio with more cultural options.

There are countless historic churches located in the neighborhood. Among the best known, we can mention: the Church of Nossa Senhora do Monte Serreado, attached to the Monastery of São Bento, the Church of Nossa Senhora do Monte do Carmo, the Church of Santa Cruz dos Militares, the churches of Santo Antônio and da Ordem Terceira de São Francisco attached to the Convent of Santo Antônio, the Capela do Menino Deus, the Church of Nossa Senhora da Candelária, the Church of Nossa Senhora da Lapa dos Mercadores, the Church of Santa Rita de Cássia, the Church of Nossa Senhora do Rosário and São Benedito, the Church of Santa Luzia, the Church of São José, the Church of the Third Order of Carmo, among others.

It is a neighborhood of great tourist interest, especially for those who are curious about Colony Brazil and the Empire of Brazil. In the region are Paço Imperial and Convento do Carmo, which is the only building in the Americas where a European monarch died, the queen of Portugal Dona Maria I, the Madwoman, and the National Historical Museum, one of the largest and oldest in the parents.

In addition to antiques, it also has some gems of Modernism, such as the Gustavo Capanema Building, designed by Le corbusier, Niemeyer and Lúcio Costa, among others, with their tiles and interior frescoes by Portinari.
