This small cottage has been beautifully renovated, including a new full kitchen, new bathroom, and lovingly restored wood floors. It is a perfect work-cation location with fast 50MB WiFi/Ethernet. It is conveniently located in the center of town and just minutes from historical Tipsinah Mounds park on the Pomme de Terre Lake and River. The lake and river are known for excellent fishing and wonderfully isolated kayaking.

The space
If you like to cook, you have an outdoor view from both the kitchen sink and the dual fuel stove. The floor plan is open, so you can talk with family or friends in the living room, sun room or bay window at the same time.

If you don’t feel like cooking, Hans House restaurant is just next door, where the chef makes nearly everything from scratch and cooks a variety of cuisines. If you need groceries, K&L Market is right across the street.

Where you’ll be

Elbow Lake, Minnesota, United States

We’re only 15 minutes away from Tipsinah Mounds - the campground on the Pomme de Terre Lake and River. The lake is great for fishing and swimming and the river is nice for leisurely kayaking. The Tipsinah Mounds park is owned by the city of Elbow Lake and free to visit.

Tipsinah Mounds has been explored for centuries. You can learn about its history in the Grant County Historical Museum in Elbow Lake (only one block from the cottage). There is a wonderful Indian display with artifacts and skeletons found in the region as well as documentation and exhibits of the early inhabitants of the area. Archaeologists have found bone tools and flint chips dating back to 9000 B.C. Nearly 40 Indian burial mounds can be found east of the entrance road to the park that are believed to have been built from 1000 A.D. to 1600 A.D. Burial mounds in the area were mapped out in the 1960’s and continued to be discovered within the park as late as 1992.

The Pomme de Terre River was a natural boundary between Dakota Plains Indians and the Chippewa who preferred the wooded portions of Minnesota and Wisconsin. Around the turn of the century the peninsula was purchased by James J. Hill and his Great Northern Railroad as an executive retreat.

If you’re a book-lover, the Grant County library is just across the street from Hans House.
There is a disc golf course in town and you can check out discs free of charge from the library. You can also check out the selection of board games that the library has.
Elbow Lake is also the county seat; you can take a self-guided tour of the historic county courthouse.

We have three children, all in the Twin Cities (Minneapolis/St. Paul) we have fled to the countryside where we now live with our three cats. (compensating?) I love kayaking, biking and playing in small music groups (violin or djembe) and designing/making art, Bill loves hiking, reading, eating, collecting and Pokémon Go. We both love snorkeling.
