Our house was originally part of the former Tuatapere Primary School. It has been fully renovated into a modern, comfortable and warm home with a few quirky original details retained. The house is very private, situated on a big section landscaped with New Zealand native plants and fruit trees which attract numerous native birds, including the tiny, cheeky silvereyes after which the house is named. If you have more guests check out the listing "The Principal's Office" (on same site).

The space
The Tuatapere Primary School closed in 2002 after the native timber felling stopped some 15 years earlier and the town's population gradually declined. You will be staying in what used to be the staff room of the school before the renovation. Tuatapere's sawmiling history can be recognised in the beautiful native rimu timber that has been used in the building.

Where you’ll be

Southland, New Zealand

Our house is at the edge of town but here that means only a short walk to the "CDB". The Humpridge Track office is only 650m away. Tuatapere has a good 4 Square supermarket for your groceries and a few eaters/cafes - ask us for recommendations. There are a few galleries and shops. Two service stations offer 24/7 fuel, and there is a medical centre and pharmacy depot.

The Tuatapere Domain is a short but stunning walk through native lowland podocarp forest and easily accessible from our house, or there are longer bush walks if you would like to stretch your legs. Some of the nearby attractions include: the Humpridge Track, tramps along the Southern Coast, the awesome Wairaurahiri Jet experience, Lake Hauroko, the Great Totara Trees walk, the self-guided Clifden Caves, the historic bridge at Clifden, fabulous beach and farm horse trekking in Orepuki, beach combing and foraging, hunting, fishing and more.

My husband and I along with our 3 very busy children live on a sheep and beef farm in the Tuatapere area.
I am originally from the North Island and have been living here for almost 10 years now and absolutely love it!
If you were interested in visiting the farm we would love to show you around if it suited at the time of your stay.
