The space
Galaxyvlei is a farm situated 10km outside the small town of Memel in the Freestate province, located close to the provincial boundaries of both kwaZulu-Natal and Mpumalanga. The house on the farm is the original farmhouse that has recently been renovated. It is secured with a clearview fence as well as an electrical fence. Access is gained by an electrical motor gate via remote. The house is surrounded by beautiful trees and manicured lawns which makes it perfect for a weekend away with family and friends with or without children. Children can roam free and safely explore the farm whilst playing in the nearby fountain next to the house, which originates from the Kranskop Water fall. It is truly a peaceful and beautiful environment to which you can escape the busy lives we have in the city. With only a 2hr 45 minute drive from johannesburg.

Other things to note
Birder’s Paradise! The entire area around Memel is a birder’s paradise, with varied landscapes from pockets of cloud forest to gently undulating hills with willow fringed dams and wetland vlei. The area south and east of Memel is more mountainous and dramatic, being on the edge of the Drakensberg Mountain range, and North of Memel you will find Seekoeivlei Wetland Reserve and more wetlands along the Klip River as it winds through open alpine farmlands. Take a slow drive west along the R556 from Memel with your binoculars and look out for Grey and Red Wing Francolins, Southern Bald ibis, Blue Crane, Grey Crowned Crane (Also called MAHEM), wattled Crane and blue korhaan among other bird species that thrive in the combination wetland, alpine grasslands and grazing.

The Species checklist for birding in and around Memel is 250, and 100 - 120 species can easily be seen over a weekend in the area. The best time for birding is in the rainy summer months, but this can also make some of the roads difficult to negotiate, so head there in a 4X4 if you can, or pack your walking shoes as a wetland and the klipriver is walking distance from the farm house.

The Memel area is particularly well known of its many species of Lark, including Rudd’s Lark, Eastern Long-Billed Lark, Pink-billed lark and Botha’s Lark.

If you are a birdwatcher, then Galaxyvlei is the perfect destination!
