Centro, Minas Gerais, Brazil

The heart of Belo Horizonte, as it is also called downtown, gathers part of the historical, architectural and cultural heritage of Belo Horizonte. It has a mixed characteristic for being both residential and commercial. Recently, downtown BH has undergone a process of revitalization, with recovery of streets and buildings, installation of security cameras and changes in traffic to privilege pedestrians.

The region has an excellent infrastructure. It has ample and diversified commerce, with malls, popular shopping and street stores. There are restaurants that serve the public with different purchasing power. Downtown BH is the best neighborhood in terms of public transportation in town. There are two subway stations, Lagoinha and Central, and several municipal and intercity bus lines and Bus Rapid Transit buses, called "Move", cross their streets daily. The Belo Horizonte Bus Station is also located in the region.

Downtown BH is a planned neighborhood. In its initial design, it was presented as a chessboard, with parallel streets and orthogonal avenues that, geometrically designed, converged on the squares of the city.

For those who want to know a little about the local culture, Downtown BH is a good place to start. The Central Market, the Palace of the Arts and the Arts and Crafts Fair are located in the area. The Central Market is one of the main tourist attractions in Belo Horizonte, with around 400 stores that sell everything from traditional products (such as cheeses, guavas and cachaças) to vegetables, fruits, handicrafts and objects of decoration. Also famous are the bars, located at the entrances of the establishment, which sell beer and typical foods.

The "Palácio das Artes" is the most important cultural complex in Belo Horizonte. Flanked by the vegetation of the Municipal Park, facing Avenida Afonso Pena, it occupies an area of 18,500 square meters and gathers several cultural spaces in the same place.

Every Sunday, until 2:00 PM, the Afonso Pena Avenue between the streets of Bahia and Guajajaras the traffic is blocked for the Fair of Art and Crafts, or simply, "Hippie Fair", as it is traditionally called by the locals. The Fair is considered one of the great centers of dissemination of the regional culture. There are more than 2,500 exhibitors selling arts, costume jewelry, handicrafts, decorations, tapestries, costumes and typical foods.

For those who want to exercise or just enjoy a large green area, the best option is the Municipal Park. The Municipal Park was inspired by the French parks of Belle Époque, with rose bushes. With an area of 182 thousand square meters, it has diverse flora with more than 50 species of trees. The park is widely used for physical exercise and has as options leisure sports courts, toys, rowing boats, riding animals and cultural events.
