Where you’ll be

Killorglin, County Kerry, Ireland

Cromane ranked no. 5 in Lonely Planets – ‘Secret Europe, 50 truly unforgettable experiences to inspire your next trip (2014)’.

“Unless you know it's here, you wouldn't chance upon Cromane, home to Ireland's largest natural mussel beds (up to 8000 tonnes are harvested each year). The village sits at the base of a narrow shingle spit, with open fields giving way to spectacular water vistas and multihued sunsets. Some of the area's best seafood is served at Jacks' Coastguard Restaurant, in a 19th-century coastguard station.

Southwest of Cromane is Dooks Golf Club, one of the oldest links golf courses in Ireland, opened in 1889. A little further along the road, an unsignposted lane (look for the green postbox) leads to Dooks Beach, a little-visited gem at the mouth of the River Caragh, with gorgeous views of the Kerry and Dingle mountains.”

Cromane Lower is 10km west of Killorglin, signposted off the N70. Killorglin is a bustling market town with several artisan stores (butchers, fish shop, green grocers, bakeries), supermarkets as well as several excellent bars and restaurants.
