Skala Oropou is a seaside settlement in northeastern Attica and part of the wider Oropos resort complex. It belongs administratively to the new enlarged Municipality of Oropos, while until recently it was the seat of the local Municipality of Oropoi and a little earlier of the Community of Skala Oropos. Skala houses the town hall of the new municipality, [1] whose seat has been officially designated as the settlement of Oropos.[2]. Skala has a port that hosts the ferry line Skala - Eretria.
Skala Oropou is located at a major transport hub, in the north it is surrounded by the South Euboean Gulf opposite Eretria, it borders south with Nea Politia, east with Nea Palatia and west with Agios Konstantinos.
Until the early 20th century the area of Skala was a holiday resort for the inhabitants of the villages of Oropos with few residents, while the largest areas of Skala were owned by the great benefactor Andreas Syggros. The small church of Agioi Apostoloi very close to the sea was renamed in 1890 as Agios Andreas to honour the benefactor and financier of Andreas Syggros who, moreover, after his death (1899) donated by will a large part of his property for the foundation of the Amaleion Orphanage. After the arrival of refugees in the neighboring New Palaces in 1923 the area experienced rapid building development. A major blow to the wider region of Oropos was the strong earthquake on July 20/1938 measuring 6.2 Richter centered on neighbouring Halkuchi, the earthquake killed 18 people, and there were 107 injured. Skala was severely damaged by the earthquake and was flattened for the most part, along with the rest of the settlement, the church of Agios Andreas and the Amalio Orphanage, which had begun to operate as a prison, were flattened. In 1960, the current majestic church of St. Andrew was rebuilt in place of the old one, the church was inaugurated by the Archbishop of Athens on August 22, 1965, the church belongs to the Holy Metropolis of Kifissia, Maroussi and Oropos - 6th Prefecture of Oropos.
The former prison of Oropos
The Amaleion Orphanage began to be built in 1909 on an area designated by his will by the great benefactor Andreas Syngros, a large landowner of the area from 1897 two years before his death. The place functioned as an orphanage until 1933, when it changed its operation to prisons after being bought by the Greek state. The prisons operated in violation of international standards since adults and juvenile prisoners were housed in the same premises, they were flattened with the powerful earthquake of 1938 and then the buildings were rebuilt only as prisons. The colonels' seven years turned prisons into a place of political prisoners in 1967, but they were abolished with their fall. One of the buildings of the former prisons inaugurated (1976) the 1st High School of Oropos, operated there until 1989 which was transferred to a newly built adjacent building, then transferred to another prison building the Municipal Conservatory of Oropos that exists until today.
