This home is perfect for large family gatherings, including weddings! Its property goes right along the Steamboat Rock dam of the Iowa River, and includes access to fishing and hunting opportunities.

The space
A 2,700 sq ft two-story newly remodeled home. Upon entering the house, to the left or southwest side of the home is the living room. This room has a large horseshoe-shaped leather couch with a 65” television. Lots of windows give you a great view of the front yard and pasture.

The River House can serve up to 14 guests comfortably. There is a large two-story house upstairs master bedroom with a king-size bed. Across the hall, another bedroom queen size bed and a full bathroom. Downstairs is a bedroom suite with a queen-size bed, two twin beds, a queen-size futon, and a full walk-in shower bathroom. The large living room also includes a large dining room, a library with a queen-sized futon, a fully furnished kitchen, and a sunroom with a queen-sized futon.

The River House was originally built by Jim and Joyce Potgeter in 1964. The Potgeter family has long ties from the beginning in the Steamboat Rock area. They owned and operated the Greenbelt elevators, which were located on the west side of the railroad bridge along the Iowa river. Two old metal grain storage buildings are all that remain. The current owner of the River House, Aaron Armstrong, spent a lot of time there as a boy. His grandfather, Richard Green was born on a farm northwest of Steamboat Rock in 1918, about a mile from the River House as the crow flies. Richard and his wife, Lillian Green, retired in the area in 1978 and were good friends with the Potgeter’s. Some of the best memories of Aaron’s life were at this house, along the river and in the surrounding area. Aaron purchased the River House a few years back, when he and his son were visiting on a fishing trip from California. Since lodging is limited in Steamboat Rock, he wants this house to make some great memories for others as a cool vacation rental for the locals or families visiting the area. The River House, the coolest location in Hardin County, is now available for everyone to enjoy--definitely Destination Cool!
