Where you’ll be

Ballinskelligs, Kerry, Ireland

Ballinskelligs is amazing, You have 4 fantastic beaches, The most amazing scenery you will see anywhere in the world , It is on the Wild Atlantic Way driving route and has 2 discovery points, it is in the core area of the Kerry international gold tier Dark Sky Reserve. This is the only gold tier reserve in the northern hemisphere and one of only 3 in the world . The area achieved this designation because of the lack of light pollution and if you are here on a clear night especially in winter prepare to be amazed by what you can see in the night sky
Ballinskelligs has a chocolate Factory called Skellig chocholates and you can stop off here and sample the delights. Especially good for a rainy day , Many Great Restaurants in a 10 mile radius, The Cill Rialaig famine village and artists retreat, Skellig heritage centre. pottery studio etc'
BNallinskelligs is an embarkation point for The Skellig Rock which is a Unesco world heritage site. Ballinskelligs translates from Gaelic as Home of the Skelligs as Ballinskelligs Abbey was the land base of the Monks while they lived in Skelligs and it was to Ballinskelligs Abbey they returned when they were forced to abandon Skelligs in 1210. The Ruins of the abbey are still standing and have an amazing history. The whole area is steeped in heritage, history and culture with amazing walks and trail standing stones ,ring forts, holy wells etc,etc etc
If you fancy a round of Golf Waterville is a 10 min drive and has 2 world class courses. It was also the holiday destination of Charley Chaplin and there is a festival in his honour every year. Horse-riding ,Fishing ,Water sports are all available locally.
Ballinskelligs is a Gaeltacht area which means The Irish language is still spoken. There are many traditional festivals during the year and you can often stumble on an irish music session in the local pub.
Ballinskelligs was to the forefront of Communications in the late 1800s as along with Valentia Island and Waterville we had the the first transatlantic cable stations. The First cable was laid from Valentia to Newfoundland and 3 years later we had the Ballinskelligs station. To put this in perspective it meant physically laying a cable from South Kerry , Ireland to Newfoundland. The first 3 attempts were a failure but the fourth succeeded. It meant that a message could now be sent from Ireland to America in 6 minutes where as before this the message took 6 weeks by boat. This was as much of an advancement in its time as the mobile phone or Internet of today.
