Where you’ll be

Apollonas, Greece

The lovely fishing village of Apollonas is located in the northern side of the island, 36 km from the island's capital.

The main beach is divided naturally into two areas - the first a beautiful sandy beach and the other a pebbled beach. Both are stunningly beautiful, the water is clean, the waves sometimes calm and sometimes rough depending on the wind. The village of Apollonas itself is charming, quaint, with traditional Aegean tavernas serving locally caught fresh fish, spit roasted lamb and goat, traditional Greek cuisine prepared from locally grown delicious organic ingredients. You can relax with an icy cold frappe at one of the local cafes to escape the hot sun, or just work on your tan and cool off in the water! The beach is not organised, however there are free showers and dressing rooms available.

Just a few minutes away from the main beach, heading uphill, you will find the wild beach of Apollonas, called Aformous. The pebble beach stretching in front of the Aegean, isolated from the tourist buzz, is great for a calm and relaxing time. Take some drinks and a snack with you and enjoy some hours of calmness, reading a book, swimming or just watching and listening the sea. The tamarix trees ("Armiriki" in Greek) are there to provide shade from the summer sun. The beach is great for snorkelling, as there you can explore the rich flora and fauna of the sea-bottom.

Apollonas is quite close (by car or on foot) to the famous ancient Kouros statue, which is worth a visit if you are in the area. The beautiful statue of Kouros, which lies on an unpaved road above the village, is a half-finished statue of 10.5 metres, dating back to the 6th century BC. It is believed, by many archaeologists, to represent the god Dionysus. The Kouros of Apollonas remains in an ancient marble quarry, which is one of the oldest quarries in Greece.
