Te Poutapeta is a Historic Places Trust listed building. Up until the 1980s it served as the community Post Office. Our family run it as a B&B or Holiday House but do not live on site. Guests have the entire house at their disposable. We provide continental breakfast. The Post Office is a one minute walk to our long and expansive beach. You’ll love our Poutapeta for its history, spaciousness and comfort. It is relaxing and unspoilt. Nau mai, haramai!

The space
Te Poutapeta has 3 bedrooms; the Postmaster's Office, the Mail Sorting Room and the Mail Clerk's Office. There are two bathrooms each with a shower and toilet. The lounge and dining room is huge with comfortable furnishings, a piano (belonging to the host's great-grandmother), tv, library and games. There is a fully outfitted kitchen and dining room located towards the back of the Post Office.

Where you’ll be

Tokomaru Bay, Gisborne, New Zealand

Tokomaru Bay was once a thriving community of 5000 people, now there are about 300 residents, 90% Maori and we have a long and interesting history. There is a well stocked Four Square supermarket, a tavern overlooking the sea which is a great place for dinner, 4 marae, a craft shop and soon to be opening cafe and fish & chip shop.

Bill is born and raised on the East Coast and Jan is originally from Taranaki on the West Coast. We have raised and homeschooled 6 children here on the Coast, 3 of whom are still at home. We live on 4 acres of land and milk a cow, raise sheep, ducks, dogs and 200+ chickens. (so free range eggs are on the breakfast menu) We do not live on site but about 1 minutes drive away. We meet and greet our guests and settle them in to the Post Office. We are only a phone call away and are available to give local knowledge and involve guests in village life. Jan and Bill have travelled in their younger days and used to be the cook and butler for the Lord and Lady Rootes in Berkshire, England. We have also travelled with our family here in NZ, Australia and some of the Pacific Islands. Life on the Coast is unique, simple and relaxed and we would like to think that as a family we are that way inclined.
