Cottage on the Hei is located behind our farm on more than a hectare of land, in a protected nature reserve just outside Dwingeloo in Drenthe. A special place, because you literally walk up the heath from our yard. No traffic, no neighbors, no hustle and bustle.

The adventure starts on arrival, because in order to reach our cottage you need to drive a little bit over a dirt road. This road is not accessible to traffic. You can't get it much quieter in the Netherlands!

The space
The cottage on the Hei offers space for two people. The cottage has been completely renovated in 2018 and 2021 and has a light interior. The cottage consists of two rooms: a living room of 24 m2 with French doors to the terrace, and a compact, cozy bedroom with double bed (160x200m). In the living room is a sofa, armchair and dining area (with table and chairs, mini-fridge, kettle and Nespresso machine). The adjacent modern bathroom has a spacious walk-in shower, sink and toilet. Open the garden doors and you stand on a large private terrace, overlooking the orchard. Under the canopy is the outdoor kitchen (with four-burner gas stove, oven and bar with 8 stools). Would you like some more luxury? You can also book a breakfast for EUR 9,- p.p.

Cottage on the Hei is behind our farm and has free views over 5,000 m2 of land with orchard and meadow. You can pick apples and raspberries in the autumn. For children there is a trampoline and a half pipe. The pool (in summer) is for shared use. There is also a treehouse sauna and an outdoor wood-burning stove which guests can use for a fee.

From the cottage, our road crosses into heath area where you can walk and bike. Nearby are the Dwingelderveld and the Drents-Friesewold with even more hiking and biking routes.

Cottage on the Hei is located in a protected nature reserve just outside Dwingeloo. Half an hour walk away (fifteen minutes by bike, five minutes by car) lies the recreational lake Blue Lake and in the vicinity there are three extensive nature reserves: the Dwingelderveld, the Drents-Friese Wold and the Weerribben.

Dwingeloo is an authentic and touristy town, with good restaurants and nice terraces. There are two supermarkets, several shops, an outdoor pool and an ice cream parlor. There is plenty to see and do in the area, both for nature lovers and for sports enthusiasts (hiking, cycling and mountain biking routes, TT circuit, sailing in Giethoorn), culture lovers (Shakespeare Festival in Diever, theatres in Assen and Meppel) and historically interested people (hunebedden, Kamp Westerbork, Oermuseum Diever).

We zijn naar Drenthe gekomen vanwege de ruimte en de rust. We zagen deze plek en waren op slag verliefd! Buiten wonen is weliswaar veel werk, maar de vrijheid die wij ervaren is fantastisch. Het voelt eigenlijk als een permanente vakantie. We hopen dat deze plek hetzelfde effect op onze huurders zal hebben.
