Ancient and airy dwelling at the base of a hill in the Upper Volturno Valley, municipality of Colli a Volturno at the foot of the Mainarde, a splendid mountain range whose peaks are reflected in the waters of an enchanting lake. Spacious and welcoming indoor and outdoor spaces allow you to experience a pleasant country atmosphere, combining it with the possibility to quickly reach the many historical-naturalistic sites of this beautiful region, thanks to the strategic position of the residence.

The space
During the Second World War this ancient dwelling, for its "happy" position, was chosen as the seat of the German command first, and then of the American one. The structure, where horses and carriages were originally kept by the owners who lived in the nearby village, has undergone various changes. In memory of what lived during the war, an iron plate of a German mortar forms the base of the large fireplace that dominates the living room.the house is located on two floors connected by an internal staircase. A bedroom and a bathroom are on the ground floor, the other three bedrooms and another bathroom are on the upper floor. There is a well-stocked kitchen on each floor, each with a fireplace equipped for barbecue. The living room on the ground floor opens onto the garden with patio, from here you can reach the olive grove which, turning around behind the house, connects to the (where you can have, on request, a swimming pool for children) is accessed from the kitchen on the upper floor. All spaces enjoyable, particularly pleasant to dine on the terrace watching the stars.

Where you’ll be

Colli a Volturno, Molise, Italy

DESCRIPTION OF THE AREA
At the foot of the Mainarde mountains, a mountain chain within the National Park of Abruzzo,Lazio e Molise, it offers lovely walks to lovers of nature, trekking and mountain bike. In the local woods live wolves, chamoises, deers and bears. On the surrounding peaks hovers the golden eagle. For a long time these beautiful mountains were home of '"Mainarde's Bear", the french painter and hermit Charles Moulin, a friend of Matisse, who chose to live and die here . On the top of Mount Brown, in the wood, it is still possible to come across the remains of the refuge, built among huge rocks, that hosted him.
Also nearby are the impressive springs of the Volturno river, whose clear waters are home to a rich fauna of local and migratory birds. But you can even go swimming, canoeing or fishing in the upper course of this river, the longest in the southern Italy. Set in the amphitheater of the Mainarde Mountains, sun-lovers and swimming fans should visit the beautiful lake of Castel San Vincenzo( 10 minutes drive), where you can rent pedal boats and horses for excursions.
A few kilometers away from golf corses in the wild nature.
Within half an hour drive you can reach the “Alto Molise”, a region of high environmental value (such as UNESCO natural reserve of “Collemeluccio and Monte di Mezzo” and the “Garden of the Apennine Flora” in Capracotta, the second highest town of Apennines at 1,421 meters above sea level).
In 30 minutes you can also reach the ski resorts of Roccaraso and Campitello Matese.
Within an hour drive, through the villages within the Abruzzo National Park, you can reach Pescasseroli where the Park's administration and its interesting Visitors Centre are located, together with an adjacent zoo of local fauna.
Nearby, towns rich in history and culture as Agnone, the "Athens of Sannio", where the Marinelli's Pontifical Foundry is operating for over 1000 years, exporting its bells worldwide.
Many archaeological sites are present in this area, little known but extremely interesting:
- the early medieval abbey of San Vincenzo al Volturno (10 minute drive)
- the Samnite Amphitheatre of Pietrabbondante (35 minutes)
- the Samnite-Roman and medieval site of Altilia’s town (35 minutes)
Moreover there are numerous castles, among which we can mention the nearby Castles of Cerro a Volturno and of Venafro, and ancient and interesting churches. "Castel di Sangro", cheerful mountain Abruzzo town, hosts a permanent gallery dedicated to his naturalist painter Teofilo Patini (Castel di Sangro, May 5, 1840 - Naples, November 16, 1906).
Within 60/70 minutes drive are the beautiful public beaches of Petacciato and of the nice town of Vasto ( Adriatic Sea ); because of traffic, within 70/80 minutes drive are the beaches of Scauri, Gaeta¸ Sperlonga ( Tyrrhenian Sea), where are almost only bathing facilities.
In less than an hour you can be in Caserta with its magnificent royal palace and, from there, Napoli, Pompei and the Amalfi Coast. From Napoli a short ferry drive will take you to the beautiful islands of Capri and Ischia.
With an hour and half drive you can be in the southern outskirts of Rom, and leave the car at the Laurentina subway station, from which you quickly reach the city center.
