Quiet, cozy cottage in the beautiful Mimbres Valley, located between City of Rocks State Park and Lake Roberts. Sleeps three, or couple with two small children (1 double bed, 1 single). Pet friendly, with large shaded enclosure. Hummingbird haven from April to October. Patio with charcoal grill and a garden for seasonal picking. Breakfast and snack items in the fridge. Se habla Espanol.

The space
This is a rural area with dark night skies. The casita is located in a small settlement area known to locals as San Juan. It is across from the old San Juan Church, and a short distance from the Mimbres river (the part with water in it!). People who live in this area are farmers, ranchers, foresters, artisans and artists. Many are retired, but many are families who have lived in the Valley for generations.

San Juan is a settlement, rather than a village. There aren't any businesses in San Juan, but there is a Catholic church with services in Spanish every other Saturday afternoon. Approximately 25 families live in this settlement. The nearest village is San Lorenzo, 2-3 miles to the north. Even though the post office lists the address in Hanover, it isn't in Hanover (about 10 miles away), but we share a zip code. They have the post office for our zip code since we lost our local post office.

I am New Mexico through and through although I have lived in other places. I chose the Mimbres Valley as my retirement home after teaching sociology 20+years at UTEP (in Baja NM, aka El Paso TX) and 20 years working at the UNM Medical School. I feel blessed to be able to explore my artistic inclinations through jewelry making, creative writing, photography, and painting . I am an avid reader, like tai chi and yoga, gardening, hiking, home repairs (with the exception of plumbing and electrical). My red chile sauce is to die for.

I would like to meet the guests who stay here, but don't want to be intrusive. If you just want to get the keys and call if there's a need or a problem, I'm fine with that. If you wish to chat a bit, I am a retired university professor (UTEP/Sociology) who studied at UNM and currently paints, makes jewelry, pulls weeds, reads books, and is curious about the world. I am currently in the process of rehabbing an old adobe.
