The Tobacco Barn is a light & airy conversion which comfortably sleeps 6.

There's a private garden and entrance to the swimming pool & terrace.
A spacious open plan kitchen/diner looks out through vast patio doors into the garden and al fresco dining area. The large, sunny master bedroom has an en-suite-bath & over-sized shower. Two more bedrooms upstairs served by a bathroom.
The mezzanine and beamed lounge has comfy sofas, a large flat screen TV.

We do not accept any visitors under 18.

The space
Originally used for drying tobacco until the 1950's, Tobacco Barn is a light and spacious barn conversion, which comfortably sleeps 6. There is a private garden and a huge hanger over a patio and entertaining area. You also have your own entrance to the swimming pool and terrace.

With it’s exposed stone walls and oak beams, Tobacco Barn is simply full of character and with a really friendly feel. There is gated access to the Barn's grounds, allocated car parking and a short wander through a garden gate to the entrance of this lovely conversion.

Downstairs you will find a large kitchen/diner, an eclectic mix of crockery, lots of pots and pans and a dining table to seat 8 people. The kitchen has a large gas oven and hob, a dishwasher, a washing machine and a fridge freezer. There is a docking station to play your favourite music whilst you cook the dinner, as well as a good selection of books for if you fancy a read. The kitchen/diner is open plan and looks out through the vast French doors into the garden. There is large master bedroom downstairs with oak furniture and it's own en-suite bathroom, complete with roll top bath and over-sized shower.

Stairs from the kitchen/diner lead to the beautiful mezzanine lounge which comfortably seats 6 people with it’s plush sofas, large flat screen TV and board games. Mind your head on the low beams! There are two further bedrooms upstairs – both comfortable doubles. Both of these bedrooms are served by an additional bathroom with a loo, a small bath and a shower over.

Outside Tobacco Barn there is a huge covered entertaining area – fabulous for an alfresco breakfast, an evening barbecue or to simply sit in the shade and enjoy the local wine. You have your own access to the pool and garden, which is shared with the Stonemason’s Barn.

Spring and Summer are simply beautiful here, but Autumn is also awonderful time to visit the area and take advantage of the endless walking and cycling opportunities. The Tobacco Barn has full central heating and is available to rent all year, so you can enjoy cosy nights in after a day in the fresh air.

All sockets are 3-pin British, so there is no need to bring loads of adaptors if travelling from UK. For European mainland travellers, you may need to bring adaptors for your 2-pin items.

A welcome basket of tea, coffee and essentials is provided for you on arrival, with our pleasure.

Les Alleuds, Nouvelle-Aquitaine, France

The climate of the Poitou-Charentes is one of the mildest in France, second only to the Mediterranean coast in hours of sunshine. Famous for sunflowers, miles of regimented vineyards and thousands of acres of wide, green spaces begging to be explored. Gentle rivers and waterways wander throughout this region, and ancient towns straddle those river banks with offers of “une table avec une vue” while you linger over lunch or stop for a drink. Oysters are a big local speciality of the region, as is the Pineau Cognac aperitif. (Yummy!)
Our two gîtes are situated between the market towns of Sauzé-Vaussais and Chef-Boutonne in the department of the Deux-Sèvres.
The area surrounding Sauzé-Vaussais was the backdrop of many wars and fights in ancient times and the town has a Romanesque church, a small hotel, bars, a supermarket, boulangeries (of course) and an English tea shop. Chef-Boutonne also has several bars and restaurants, and both towns host weekly markets where you can buy fresh, local produce. Sauzé-Vaussais has a lake with children's play area - a really great day out and there are other spots just like this. “Plan d’eaus” they are called, locally. The delightful Château Javarzay at Chef-Boutonne is well worth a visit, although ‘spoilt for choice’ as there are so many beautiful Châteaux in striking distance.
If you like a bargain, why not wander around some of the many local brocantes (car boot sales - but with style!) which are held throughout the year. If you fancy nipping out for a quick drink to our "local", try the La Chat bar in Melleran- it's within cycling/walking distance and is run completely by volunteers. The bar is open Friday and Saturday evenings and offers good food, very reasonably priced drinks, and games etc for children.
Just down the road, the ancient town of Melle has silver mines and three Romanesque churches to visit. With, of course more great little bars and restaurants including a lovely pizzeria. We are ideally placed for exploring the glorious Charentise countryside which is bursting with sunflowers during the summer months. The area surrounding our gites is perfect for walking.
There are some wonderful beaches less than 2 hours drive on the spectacular Côte Sauvage, but even closer still is the holiday resort of Châtellion Plage and the cosmopolitan seaside town of La Rochelle, one of the most picturesque and historically rich cities on the Atlantic coastline; with it’s huge marina, a very large aquarium and a botanical garden .
Civray, Ruffec and Confolens are all lovely places to visit where you can picnic on the river or hire a boat at Marais Poitevin (Venice Vert or Green Venice) and spend the day meandering through the collection of sleepy water ways. Still with rivers in mind, why not spend the day kayaking on the Charente - great family fun! Even enjoy a little white water in places - but nothing too crazy...
There are numerous historical towns within an easy drive such as St-Jean-d'Angély, Chauvigny and Parthenay, all of them with their individual stories to tell. Why not ‘swing by’ La Vallée de Singes (valley of the monkeys) at Romagné, which is a wildlife park with no fences or cages! Visit the famous Poitou donkeys for guided visits and animal rides - just 30 minutes down the road... or La Planète des Crocodiles - an hour away in Civaux!
If you want a full day of adventure we would recommend La Palmyre Zoo at Royan (one of the best in France, so I’m told), the Puy du Fou theme park, south of Cholet. Perhaps Futurescope at Poitiers, only an hours easy drive away.
This is a great area where you can have the best of all worlds - peaceful countryside, seaside resorts, ancient towns and cities and numerous family attractions. Even without the glorious sunshine, (and as the 2nd sunniest spot in France, we have plenty of that) we think there is something for everyone!
At Rustic France, we are at the heart of a thousand activities; but, when you are ‘back at base’, unwind and relax into Charentaise life. Of course, you could always just take a glass of cool Pineau and sit by the pool, on the terrace, in the garden and relax in the French countryside outside the majestic Tobacco Barn or the romantic Stonemasons Barn...

You know when you love the pace and style of a particular life SO much, you just have to recreate that feeling every day? Well, that's what drew me to buy, love and share this 'hidden gem' gite complex in South West France.

The surrounding area has all my favourite things, fresh air, nature in the form of rivers and sea, meadows, vineyards and forests. Added to this a continental society obsessed with eating, drinking and enjoying the outside - for as long as the year allows. Which is quite a bit!

I have travelled a lot, I know what I like in a holiday or mini-break, and so I hope to recreate that for others too.
I love languages anyway, and so whilst my French is 'passable', the aim is to be fluent - even when I'm talking to the bank or the tax office!!

France is the birth place of 'cinema' - their word, of course, and so my love of movies is right at home here.
The joy of exploring wonderful cities will be increased as I now live so close to so many, and fantastic European train travel and links mean Spanish, German and Italian cities are within super easy reach too!

Food and drink - my favourite thing, and France is just so good at it! I aim to build on my cooking skills and learn as much as I can from local culinary genius!!
