Guadeloupe

Vieux Habitants .....
Halfway between Bouillante and Basse-Terre, this village is one of the oldest in Guadeloupe from 1636, the small area called Fond des Habitants welcomed the first "hired" of the Compagnie des Isles d 'Amérique; at the end of the contract these former semi-slaves who regained freedom aspired to forget their past by settling away from the sites where the Company was domiciled (Vieux-Fort & Basse-Terre), They were the first settlers to be called "inhabitants".
The Church of Saint Joseph, a massif and sober buttressed building, dates from the end of the 17th century and belongs to the first generation of religious buildings built in hard in Guadeloupe, succeeding the pioneering constructions in fork and reeds; the facade has a certain nobility with its equipment of grey stones and its wrought gate, sculpted by artisans from the Limousin. Inside, the nave is covered with an inverted hull frame assembled by marine carpenters.
It was originally an agricultural commune renowned for its coffee, vanilla and more generally Creole gardens. In Creole Zabitan, its inhabitants are called Habissois(es). The commune is crossed from coast to coast by the Grande Rivière des Vieux-Habitants and the Rivière de Beaugendre which flow into the Caribbean Sea to the north of the city.
Places to visit: Domaine De l 'Habitation la Grivelière, Le musée du Café, Plage Simaho, Domaine Vanibel, La Cascade Paradis ....
