Get back to nature at the peaceful townships of Napperby and Nelshaby. You won’t find shops or businesses here, just a beautiful glimpse of nature untouched. Walk, cycle or drive through these townships, an easy 10 minutes’ drive from Port Pirie.

History
Napperby has a proud pastoral history extending back to the mid-1800s. Pastoralists used large areas of land for grazing. The township became a prosperous farming community with a school created in the old outstation’s shearers’ quarters.

The area also has a strong European history, complimenting that of neighbouring Port Pirie. Many Greek immigrants settled in Napperby after World War II and established market gardens. Napperby and Nelshaby even earned the title of ‘The Tomato Growing Place’ around Australia for this very reason!

If you’re looking for a great little place to get food only 6 minutes away from your stay,
You’ll find ‘Harry’s Homemade’ on the corner of Augusta Highway and Flinders View Drive.
Open 8am till 7pm.
(Simply type in, ‘Harry’s Homemade’ into google maps for directions.
They have a range of Fruit and Veg, seafood, A pickled range of goodness, chutneys, jams and a takeaway kitchen with a great variety.
Beautiful view of the Flinders Rangers to enjoy with your meal.

EXPLORE

Nelshaby Reserve and Reservoir is a hidden gem of the Southern Flinders Ranges. This reserve, located three kilometres north of Napperby, is simply spectacular after solid rainfall. The reservoir was once the source of domestic water for Port Pirie and is fed by underground springs and small creeks. The reserve comes alive with the beautiful bird songs of the parrot species and water birds that use the area as a habitat and breeding place.

Throughout this area, eucalypts, native pines, wattles, eremophila and native grasses thrive in the winter and spring months.

Near the reserve is Lawrie Park, where you can stay for a few hours or stay overnight. Have a picnic or BBQ then take a leisurely stroll along the picturesque walking trail. This area was once used as a resting place for cattle and horses driven from the north but today, is a peaceful area to unwind and relax.

Low impact bushwalking can be enjoyed at Napperby Gorge. This unspoiled track is relatively easy and has a gentle slope for the first half. Finish the walk and you will be rewarded by ‘Hells’ Gate’ at the end. Access is by foot only via the entrance to the Scout Camp.

If you like to explore the outback further,

Alligator Gorge is a wonderful tourist attraction. It has Beautiful scenery and some amazing and interesting tracks to walk and enjoy.
It’s a nice drive that should approximately take 1 hour and 20 minutes to arrive.
