The space
Galatée is a new traditional houseboat located on a quiet wooded private gated mooring in the heart of London. She is bright and warm. The private mooring is in a beautiful spot on Regent's Canal, surrounded by trees and local wildlife and with no overlooking neighbours. Galatée is not moored on the public towpath. This is a calm and peaceful place to stay right in the centre of London.
Update Covid-19: Please note that we follow Airbnb enhanced cleaning guidelines throughout the boat to ensure a clean and sanitized stay, including sanitizers and cleaning supplies available for guests.
This listing is for a private area at the bow end of the houseboat, it is not for the whole boat. You have a personal entrance onto the bow of the houseboat with outside deck seating and your own self-contained, private cabin comprising a folding table and chairs, DVD and videos, and sofa-bed, all separated by a large cupboard from the small but comfortable double-berth with washbasin. There is an electric heater in the cabin. Please be aware that space is confined on a boat. The berth has a foot-well under the cupboard to accommodate a wall-to-wall double bed (140 cms wide by 195 cms long). The sofa-bed is 80 cms wide for one adult or child. Complete bed linen and towels are provided and the beds are prepared for you.
You have a private bathroom with small bath, shower and chemical toilet. There is plentiful hot water, mains electricity, and free wifi. We offer complimentary tea, coffee, and cereal, milk, juice, jams, bread etc for breakfast. Also a kettle, toaster, plates, cups, glasses and cutlery are provided in your room and the shared microwave and fridge are available.
We are pleased to provide our guests with use of our garden area. In the summer there is a hot-tub, when available, and bbq (timings to be agreed with the hosts). We also have a little rowboat for those who know how to row. There are 25 steps down to the mooring and a large step onto the boat. The hosts live in a separate area at the other end of the boat (stern). When possible we will be there personally to welcome you and explain everything about life on board Galatée and how the mooring works. If we are away a friend will meet and greet you.
Living on a houseboat is not like living on dry land. Some people expect it to be cold and damp, but our home is dry and warm. Galatée is securely moored and does not sway at all in the water unless in the wake of a large boat.
There are some things to remember about boat life:
- The shower/bath does not empty without the flick of a switch for the pump on the side of the bath. There is a chemical toilet, perfectly hygienic.
- Water on the boat is pure and drinkable, and stored in a tank under the flooring. You will hear a noise from the supply pump when taps are turned on.
- Living on board is comfortable, warm and fun but you must be aware that houseboats have boat fittings and conditions, space is confined and interior soundproofing is less efficient than in a normal house.
Washing machine/tumble dryer & ironing facilities are available on demand. There is a small supermarket round the corner and an easy walk to Islington Angel shopping center (Waitrose, M&S, Sainsbury's) and to Chapel Market for fresh market food.
It is a pleasant walk along the towpath to King's Cross/St Pancras Int'l station and Granary Square (15 mins). Towards the east is Islington Angel, with its restaurants, theatres, music clubs, and shopping centre, and towards the west it's about a 30 minute walk along the canal to Camden lock and the attractions of Camden market. And there is an abundance of railway, underground and bus connections in the area.
