Chiaia: the most exclusive area in Naples

One of the most beautiful cities in Italy, Naples preserves - in the monuments, on the roads, in the noisy squares, in the colorful alleys - the big and the little signs of its history of capital of the Spanish Viceroyalty and the Reign of the Two Sicily. In Piazza Plebiscito, the seventeenth-century Real Palace rises up with majesty and, on the facade, to testify the past, are placed the statues of the most famous representatives of the dynasties that reigned on the city. Inside, you can visit the Historical apartment and the eighteenth-century Theatre of Court.

Then you can visit a lot of churches: S.Francesco di Paola (century XIX) of neoclassical forms; S.Anna dei Lombardi (XV-XVII centuries), with many pictorial works and a crib of the Rossellino; S.Chiara (reconstructed after the war according to the original fourteenth-century forms), with the Chiostro of the Clarisse, splendid eighteenth-century peasant garden; S.Domenico Maggiore (century XIV), with remarkable frescoes; the Cathedral, with the famous Chapel of S.Gennaro, in which the blood of the Saint is conserved; S.Lorenzo Maggiore (century XIII), of Gothic forms; S.Giovanni a Carbonara (centuries XIV-XV), containing numerous sculptures.

Between the castles, the palaces and the villas, you can remember: New Castle or Maschio Angioino (1279-82, but reconstructed in the XV century), with the poderose merlate towers, two of which lock up a marble Arc of Triumph; the Palazzo Cuomo (Reinassance style), center of the Filangieri Museum (archaeological finds, paintings, arms, ceramics, porcelains); Villa Floridiana (1817-19), with the beautiful park with the open-air small theatre and the Museum of the Ceramica Duca di Martina. Between the museums, beyond those cited, you can visit: the Gallery of Modern art (works of Michetti, Gemito, Corot); The National Archaeological Museum, where you can find one of the maximum Greek world-wide collections of greek and roman finds; the Museum and the Galleries of Capodimonte (tapestries; works of Botticelli, Raffaello, Correggio, Mantegna, Tiziano, Brueghel, Caravaggio; porcelains and majolicas; bronzes; armors; ancient clocks; ivories).

But maybe the synthesis of the history and the character of this inimitabile city is in the Certosa di S.Martino that, with the close Castel S.Elmo, dominates on the city. In the Museum of S.Martino there are a lot of things to see; between the others (paintings and sculptures, naval models, glasses, porcelains, ivories, jewels, church furnishingses), we signal the famous Neapolitan eighteenth-century cribs.

A visit is also advisable at the Aquarius of the Villa Comunale. Naples is famous also for its pizza. Other plates of the reputedlocal kitchen are: the spaghetti with tomato or clams, the minestra of verdura, the second ones of fish, the mozzarella in carrozza, the bistecca alla pizzaiola, cakes
(sfogliatelle, pastiera, zeppole, struffoli, taralli, casatielli).

From the handicraft point of view, Naples offers ceramics of Capodimonte and little figures from crib, gloves of skin, cameos, works of shell and turtle.
