The space
Our purpose is to offer an alternative experience to standard concrete Villas. It is our own family house we offer for rent to give you the feeling of a home away from home.

The villa is a soulful antic Javanese wooden Joglo, which has a rich history with unique vintage interior design furnitures and thoughtful touches from Javanese artisans.

This old wooden tek house was rebuilt with innovative design and elegance by the green awarded architect "Yu Sing" and his Akanoma Studio crew (Bandung).
Our both aim was to blend traditional Javanese village (desa) design with modern architecture technics. The flooring tiles date back to the dutch colonial time.

Our architect was awarded in 2015 and 2016 as best sustainable construction design and green leadership, with our concept of learning center, by the Swiss "Holcim Foundation" and "Futurearc" - BCI, Singapore. The philosophy behind it is called Ecopuncture. It is the equivalent of acupuncture in architecture, enhancing the energy flow in the surrounding nature through the building.

We collect rain water into tanks located next to the house.
We treat through a natural system your gray water into the frog and fish pound. Your toilet output will be recycled to produce biogaz and fertiliser for our garden surrounding the house.

The house is ideal for 4 to 6 people and can host up to 8 persons. Babies up to 2 years old free, without matras. It has 3 bedrooms, one living room and 2 bathrooms.

The main bedroom faces ocean and has king size handmade carving bed.
The other two bedrooms have garden view and queen size wooden beds with comfortable matras. All have mosquito nets.
On top of that you can enjoy the spacious living room facing ocean side, its day bed, the sofa and armchair, with a very long gallery style balcony facing the ocean and the rice fields with two hammocks.
You will have two large private open sky bathrooms facing the backyard to enjoy meditating showers and toilet time. Both are sitting toilets.
The building is surrounded by our relaxing garden.

We don't have private kitchen in this house, but we have the village women having a kitchen and dining, under the house, to cook for you.

Kemadang, Tanjungsari, Gunung Kidul Regency,, Special Region of Yogyakarta, Indonesia

1) The white sandy beach of Watu Kodok (one of the cleanest, preserved and quite beach around), is only 3-4 minutes walking distance. It has one of the best sunrise and sunset (2 hills tops look out surrounding and some other nearby on a short hike like Kosakora, Drini).

The beach faces Indian Ocean and its waves. Swimming more suitable for experience swimmers. Fun for body boarding (we have 2 for free).

But we can show you the location of our swimming "lagoon" away from the crowd where you can swim and snorkel safely when the tide is right.

There are small ocean pool-holes at another beach nearby at low tide, to have a jacuzzi like experience.

2) Our place is perfect for yoga and meditation. We can help you on meditation with different practices, from the Java spiritual melting-pot traditions.

3) Our garden is surrounded by trees, some are old high vibration trees. We can introduce you to forest therapy and tree hugging, as well as walking barefoot therapy.

3) Exclusive from our community, they can bring you for a local life "Javanese" experience, at our traditional farmer village community, 15 minutes driving inland. It is a non touristic community based immersion.

You can trek to the village through forest and farming fields (about 2 hours) or we can drive you there with local farmer pick up.

They can offer you the following activities:

- The most adventurous you will be able to descend a local adventurous karstic cave « Jurassic world » hole with safe climbing ropes.

- Explore the underground horizontal meditation cave Grengseng (with stalagmite/stalactite). It was Javanese last Hindu King Bramijaya V, meditating cave. We can even guide you for a deep meditation experience there.

- There is an ecoprint workshop where you can try tracing leaves clothes or bags and shop their products.

- After that you will enjoy a local village dinner at our cook home and sharing their life.

- The experience can end with a gamelan evening workshop with the local village band where you will all play together traditional Javanese partition inspired from Ramayana and Mahabharata mythology.

4) We can bring you also to traditional local ceremonies ans festivals if there are any at the time you are here.

Some are supra natural experience of trance dance like Jatilan or Rasulan festival (cleansing), full moon, dark moon or just traditions like wedding, circumcision and any party, concert music gamelan etc...which are all part of traditional Javanese life, if there are any at the time of your stay.

5) Many trekking possibilities around the hills, beaches and bays of Gunung Kidul. Walking trails around rice fields and forest behind the hill. The farmers and fishermen may show you how they farm/fish in a still traditional way.

6) We can book traditional massage (acupressure) from our local healers.

7) You can spot pilot whales around July to October just cruising behind the breaking waves at our beach to feed.

8) Surfing. You can try surfing at the most suitable beach for that, Wediombo beach, part of a Geopark, with astonishing bay view, just an hour deriving from our place. They rent surf boards and can show you.

9) We are central located to the more touristic famous Gunungkidul beaches like:

- Drini beach with traditional fishermen and fresh sea foods restaurants, kayak rental (within walking distance)
- Sanglen and its natural jacuzzi pool at low tide and beautiful sunrise spot next to our beach (within walking distance)
- Ngobaran sacred cliff and beach (the equivalent of Bali Uluwatu in Java) with Hindu, Islam, Kejawan and Kejawen temples with possibility to attend some ceremony if any, and on the way the holy Gua Santa Maria (Cave) where she appeared to local people (about half our scooter distance).
- Kukup for the sunsets and the small rock island and the only place where you can enjoy a cold beer around. (10 minutes scooter)
- Wediombo, part of a Geopark, where you can surf.
- Timang beach, where you can experience the local cable car over the ocean to a rock.
- Water fall of Sri Gethuk, place for cleansing, with the biggest river of our regency.

10) We can organise your trip to explore the nearby most famous and touristic Jomblang cave and Kalisuci tube caving river adventure.

11) Wanagama forest (620 hectares). On the way to city. The best preserved forest of Yogyakarta province with old Mahoney trees. Perfect for forest therapy and healing.

12) On the way from/to Yogyakarta to our place there is a wooden batik village where you can experience the art of batik on mask or any wooden piece and can shop they artefacts for cheaper than city market.

Together with the above Nglanggeran ancient volcano with cocoa plantation and chocolate factory.

Jiwa Laut means "The Soul of the Sea" in english. But it has deeper meaning as it comes from the old sanskrit word Jiva.

We are a small community of people from different background. The original founders were a group of city people looking to go back to nature and living a simpler more meaningful life. We teamed up with some local villagers already living in the area, to create our non profit organisation, Jiwa Laut, running community based projects and hospitality.

Our area was for long time inhabited by farmers following the wisdom and traditions of the old Javanese way of life, very connected to mother earth and the father universe.

Our philosophy and vision were to merge our modern eco healthy way of life and technics with the already sustainable villagers old traditions.
The result is our place as you will discover which is an eco, social and cultural "hub" and learning center to experiment sustainability on an holistic way. It is a never ending evolving project.

Our goal with hospitality is to demonstrate that living a sustainable healthy life style, can be easy, joyful and a great alternative experience. Maybe you have to leave some city life habits to be rewarded by new experience of being connected as one with the nature. This is the ultimate blissfulness as we are living it for years.

Our place is a 5200 m2 hill above Indian Ocean and Watu Kodok (Frog Stone) beach, along the unique Geopark and white sand costal area, south east of Yogyakarta Province.

You will be part of our activities if you like, as we promote empowering people around us, with use of eco material such as bamboo, ecobricks (from guests and beach collecting trash), support local farmer buying their organic or natural products over market price, fare share sustainable responsible tourism involving communities with guests supporting the people, their activities and projects, support villagers woman cooking simple healthy local meals, wooden workshop, ecoprint, post harvest processing mocaf flour and coconut oil, local handicraftmen etc..

During your stay

We are not business hotel professional as we come from different fields. Our primary activity is to run our projects and sustainability experiments.

We try to give the best hospitality from our deep heart to our guests, like hosting family or friends to make our place different from a resort. Our interaction with guests is up to our guests willing to have any with us and our extended community family and of course depends on our presence and availability with our program schedule.

If you want to be sure to meet the founder of Jiwa Laut, book and ask in advance, so she can adjust her busy planning. We all have side activities to help support ourself. At least there is always someone present on site 24h, however some of us have very very limited or no english.

Of course we are willing to share with you our natural surrounding environment, knowledge, philosophy and spirituality and alternative way of life avoiding plastic and high consumerism city life style, close to nature. Don't hesitate to ask questions.

We can help introduce you to local traditions and people living around us. We are willing to show and offer you experiences, activities and bringing you around if you want to. This way your money spent during activities will be shared to our extended communities and used to finance projects. Which is the reason why we opened our Community to Airbnb.

You will never feel bored even if you are on your own.

Jiwa Laut has a philosophy of Woman Power as the women of the group are the real decisions makers ;-)

The founder is Ira a jogjanese eco social entrepreneur woman. She can share her knowledge about nutrition healthy life style, meditation, yoga, local interior design and wooden traditional furniture.
Her passion is Javanese culture and spirituality. She has strong knowledge about meditation and metaphysic, and her love for nature, ocean, animals and sharing with others.

Her husband also living here most of the time, is from the Alps mountains. Abandoned his skis, his passion for electronic music and corporate job to retreat to a more stressless, sustainable life.
He is helping in the garden and little forest, experimenting new alternative concepts. Some people would call it an anarchical wild garden, but it is kind of art, letting the nature express itself freely.
Having his background in coaching, human resources and mindfulness. Don't hesitate to ask him for advise if needed.

We have two sisters which are our “chefs” and “homebodies”, who will make you feel homey and cook for you home made tasty healthy meals. They like to take care of children, so yours will adopt her very quickly. You can learn a lot from her from local cooking and more.

We have our “jack of all trades” who can fix almost everything to make us able to survive into the “wild”. He is also our driver and guide available for pick up/drop off and bringing people around.
He is also the local Javanese man who open the doors to local communities and people, where you will never be able to enter on your own and allow you to enjoy special local activities and experiences.

Last but not least we have our local healer/massage man.
He will do is best to fix any unbalanced and stress, avoiding your energy flow properly inside your body.
Applying hundred of years acupressure local traditions technics from level 1 to level 5 of strong pressure. Nobody ever got over 3, ready to give a go and break to number 4 level?

We have young local villagers who like to guide people for any activities. We also have old people Gamelan band, who like to share their music with you as well.

And then we have all the farmers, coming for the day farming, fishing or working at the beach warungs.
