Where you’ll be

Catterall, United Kingdom

Catterall is a small village two miles south of Garstang, with a pub, fish & chip shop, wine bar, cafe, restaurant and convenience store in walking distance from the house. A 24h convenience store is situated a mile away, and an entertainment centre with ten-pin bowling, cinema, curling and crazy golf one and a half miles to the south.
Garstang is a small market town, with four supermarkets and a delightful high street full of independent shops. It is a many time winner of the Britain in Bloom competition, and hosts an annual walking festival. There are takeaways, and a range of pubs and restaurants.
The Forest of Bowland area of outstanding natural beauty is on the doorstep (I've walked from the house to its centre at Dunsop Bridge, a fairly demanding 15 mile walk, but riverside and canalside walks can be found within a mile of the house) For golfers, the Garstang Golf course is less than a mile away.
The apartment is equally suitable for business or study - an easy commute to Preston, Lancaster, Poulton or Blackpool. Lancaster University and University of Central Lancashire are both within 10 miles, and Myerscough College less than 4 miles.

Local Attractions:
To the West: Churchtown – the village off the A586 near its junction with the A6 just north of here, is home to the Horns Inn, a pleasant country pub, serving good food, and only about a mile and a half if you fancy walking it.

To the South: Bilsborrow and Barton – south of here on the A6
On the way to Bilsborrow is the large Barton Grange garden centre, which apart from the usual garden centre wares hosts a Honeywell’s farm shop, café and restaurant, and sells an extensive range of homewares.
Next to the garden centre is The Flower Bowl, an Entertainment Centre comprising Ten-pin bowling, Cinema, Curling (yes, really!), Golf driving simulator, Crazy Golf, Café and Restaurant.
Bilsborrow village contains a fish & chip shop, post office and village stores, and the Roebuck and White Bull pubs. Also Guy’s Thatched Hamlet, a leisure complex with an on-site pizzeria and pub plus a square with craft shops. The complex includes a cricket pitch and bowling green with a clubhouse and bar.
Barton is home to Barton Bangla Brasserie, where Ali and Affi will serve a range of high-quality south Asian dishes, as well as “Indian take-away”.

To the North: Garstang, an historic market town, and the world’s first Fairtrade Town, has 4 supermarkets, (Sainsbury, Aldi, Booths, Co-Op) and a high street with many traditional independent shops. Market day is Thursday, when the high street also hosts stalls along its entire length.
Working from the North end of the high street (High street car park), of particular note are:
“Duck end” – at the bottom of the high street the river winds past and ducks tend to congregate here as lots of people like to throw bird seed.
Post Office. Anita and Nal run the One-Stop convenience store which contains Garstang’s Post Office. Open 7am to 9pm Mon-Sat and 8am to 9pm Sundays.
The Crown. Traditional pub with food menu, pool table, darts, TV sports, sometimes live music on Saturday nights.
Pipers Restaurant, gets good reviews for an ‘occasion’ meal.
Conway cards. Alison and her staff are very good at recommending greetings cards for all occasions, balloons, gift-wrapping and party supplies.
Market Place News. Richard and Kate are the town’s independent newsagents and also sell a variety of books, gifts and toys.
Market Hall. Butcher, greengrocer, a traditional sweets stall and a cheese, biscuit and cake stall share this old market building open Wednesday to Saturday until around 4:30pm.
Nest gift shop with quality gifts.
On Bridge Street:
Cobblers café bar. One of the few businesses open late (to 10pm Wed/Thu, to 11pm Fri/Sat, closed Sunday), transitions from café by day to convivial bar by night.
Garstang deli-café. Traditional coffee bar with an emphasis on wholesome quality home-made snacks, breakfast and lunch. Closed Sun-Tue, open 10am till 3pm Tue-Sat.
The Royal Oak Hotel. Cosy pub with lots of small ‘snug’ rooms and restaurant area serving local beers and good traditional pub food.
Shoreway Fisheries. Alison will sell you fine fresh fish, but closes when it’s all gone!
Timpson. Chain key-cutting, shoe repair and photo-processing shop franchised to Ian and Denise. Can print your digital snaps onto mugs, cushions, canvas etc.
On Church Street:
Garstang Fine Art. Sharon does picture framing and sells a range of prints and original works, often featuring local scenes.
Cafe Mila - Danny and Hayleyt host this highly-rated cafe for breakfast & lunch(Tue-Sat) and (Fri/Sat) evening takeaway.
Dante’s Italian takeaway, good quality pizza / pasta place.
Kwik-Kutz. Value barber shop and hairdressers. Several other hairdressers are dotted all over town!
Away from the high street:
YMCA gym and sports centre, behind Booths supermarket
Garstang swimming pool, on Oak Road off Croston Road north of the town

Further afield
Travelling north on the A6 from here you will come across…
Dewlay cheesemakers. Factory shop and tours of the cheese-making process.
Bradshaw’s farm shop. A great range of local produce, and general greengrocery.
The Bellflower – family pub with 2-for-1 deals
Stepping Stones Restaurant. Simple British food in riverside setting.
The Butty Hut and Hugo’s Ice Cream parlour; … and heading west off the A6 toward Cockerham is the Pudding House – farm shop café restaurant featuring the famous Walling’s ice cream.
The Barn at Scorton – Renowned and extensive gift shop café and restaurant, often running a barbeque in summer evenings.
Bay Horse Inn – renowned gastro-pub.
Lancaster - Historic county town with university campus, castle, Vue cinema, Dukes arts cinema/theatre, range of pubs and restaurants, outdoor activity shops, full range of chain stores.
The Lake District – Windermere is a 45 minute drive from here – head north on the A6/M6

Heading west
Either on the M55 from the junction south of here on the A6, or via the more picturesque route through St Michaels on the A586, you can access..
Blackpool – for the famous traditional British seaside experience, Tower Ballroom, Winter Gardens, pier amusements, theatres, coastal tram etc.,
Lytham & St Annes – for a quieter seaside experience, with lots of quality cafés and restaurants, and vast expanse of sand for beach walks (some OK for dogs).
Golf
Garstang golf course is a short walk away towards Garstang on Garstang Road. The world-famous Royal Lytham & St Annes course is 40 minutes’ drive away.

Walking
It is possible to access the Forest of Bowland AONB directly from the house along Stones Lane. Garstang hosts an annual walking festival, with its direct access to a network of footpaths in the direction of the Forest of Bowland AONB.
Map OL41 Forest of Bowland and Ribblesdale is recommended, and now comes with mobile download.
Serious walkers will, I’m sure, work out their own routes for half-day and full-day walks either starting directly from the house or from a short drive away, but ask John for recommendations if you have a particular type of walk in mind.

Hi, I'm a semi-retired engineering manager having spent 37 years in the automotive business. My partner Jo and I enjoy travelling and taking an interest in the language and culture of the places we visit (we've lived in Catalonia and been to most Mediterranean islands!), rather than sticking to the obvious tourist parts. Fans of cinema, theatre, restaurants and live music, we like going out and meeting friends, but aren't big drinkers. We like shopping locally and sharing our local knowledge from 16 years in the area with our guests.

Whenever possible we prefer to welcome guests in person, showing them around the apartment and answering questions, but guests can check in using a key box outside the door if required.
We can provide simple breakfast items on a self-catering basis, but do contact us if you have specific requests and we will usually be happy to oblige. We have lots of information about the local area, much of which is contained in the guide to be found at the property.
