Mkwaju is the ultimate place to disconnect and relax in secluded and beautiful surroundings while soaking up the sea air, sunshine and stunning views. Our four bed/bathrooom house has extensive veranda space, pool and beach frontage, while blending in with the environment in an area that has maintained the traditional coastal way of life. Guests can enjoy the simplicity of life here, or access a variety of activities from birdwatching, and goggling to kite surfing and deep sea fishing.

The space
We designed and built our house as a simple and beautiful getaway on the edge of the Indian Ocean within the Watamu Marine National park. Situated at the mouth of Mida Creek, an International Bird Area and UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, the house has stunning views over the mystical Whale Rock. The beaches on this side of Mida Creek are secluded and peaceful, and mostly used by traditional fishermen. There are great opportunities to explore rock pools where you can see the most amazing marine life, or to walk high on the cliffs along the coastal paths. Fresh fish, caught in the traditional manner, is available every day.

Airy and cool, the house has multiple verandas, a pool, and secluded beaches, allowing for the perfect combination of family time and privacy. The main house includes the kitchen and sitting room, a twin bedroom and the master bedroom. A separate cottage includes an additional twin and double bedroom. All four bedrooms open out on to verandas from which you get a fabulous view over the bay and out to sea. The bedrooms are all en-suite. There are fans in all the rooms, a well equipped kitchen and extra freezer space. Our housekeepers Katana and Lorna help make your stay comfortable by cleaning the house, washing up for you, washing clothes and ironing, buying and preparing fish, and even collecting your grocery shopping for you. For total relaxation, we can arrange for a cook to come and prepare all your meals.

We have made the house as environmentally friendly as possible, whilst ensuring comfort. We harvest rainwater for showers and kitchen use, and use a salt water well for our swimming pool and other household use. Solar heaters provide hot water. We recycle as much as possible, and encourage our guests to do the same. The garden is landscaped with a large area of indigenous vegetation which supports a variety of bird life, even at the hottest time of the year. Sea birds are abundant with a pair of fish eagles who nest here every year. We have landscaped some areas of our land, but left much of the natural and indigenous bush which provides shelter and food for birds throughout the year.

Where you’ll be

Uyombo, Kilifi County, Kenya

This area of the Kenyan Coast has preserved its authenticity in terms of local livelihoods, culture and tradition due to the absence of large tourist hotels and bars. The result is a peaceful and simple way of life; fresh fish daily (caught by local fishermen in the traditional way), local vegetables and cassava or rice make for a healthy diet. Supplement this with long walks on the deserted beach, goggling in rich rock pools and swimming both in the sea and in the salt water pool and you have the perfect healthy holiday in a glorious location. The area is a haven for bird watchers, hosting a pair of fish eagles which hover over the beach, and nest on one of the vegetation covered rocks opposite the house. Mida Creek itself is an area of outstanding beauty with its mangrove covered creeks, coral and abundant sea life. Close by is the fabulous Arabuko Sokoke Forest which is famed for its diversity of flora and fauna, and elephant population. An interesting working snake farm can be visited in Watamu which also has a range of shops selling clothes, artefacts and local produce, and a variety of restaurants and bars as well as a couple of excellent ice cream shops.

Jonathan and I are farmers in Western Kenya and have brought up our four children in this beautiful and dynamic country. We love our house at the coast - it gives us a great opportunity to relax and unwind in beautiful surroundings. We hope that you will take the chance to enjoy a period here away from the distractions and busyness of life, current concerns, and to read, play games which are in the house, and enjoy the simplicity of life on this unspoilt side of Mida Creek.
We are rarely on the premises when there are guests, so you get to use the house as your own. We love to share it with like-minded guests.
