Born w/ an inherent awareness of our built environment, I have always embraced my interest and passion for built structures amidst their natural settings. I surprised my family and friends by requesting a replica "town" cake when only three years old; and delighted in childhood years of hands-on activities learning spatial concepts from various miniatures. I drafted my first built project at the age of 14 years old, and solved two significant design challenges, again to the delight of my family (and ultimate dismay of the slipshod contractor!) From that experience, I progressed as somewhat of a local, small town pioneer in exploring the architecture/design industry, as the only female enrolled; and then subscribing to an independent advanced study/correspondence course; in technical/architectural drafting while in high school “shop” class. Following in the footsteps of my male cousins, I attended their alma mater and studied architectural technology; leading the AIAs (student chapter of AIA) at Fairmont State College; responding to the 1980's flood disaster by providing pro-bono building surveys in the flood path with the technical construction knowledge gained from summers spent as a student Technical Assistant in highway/bridge/building construction endeavors. From there, after a run for national office, I was determined to gain my professional degree in architecture, and thus moved to the Baltimore/Washington metro region to earn a Master of Architecture degree from the Catholic University of America; while working full time as an architectural drafting technician; progressing to architectural designer then to project architect/construction administration manager. I was introduced to world travel during a graduate study summer, and toured Europe with an architect's eye, sketchbook, and a pentax K-1000 outfitted with a wide angle lens! Upon completion of my graduate degree, I filled my "free" time with what has become nearly 25 years of pro-bono/volunteer design work with the Neighborhood Design Center in Baltimore (from which I "retired" in 2014, as a member of the Board of Directors) as well as other/similar outreach (Habitat 4 Humanity, Extreme Makeover/Home Edition, Historic District Committee, etc.) I have independently explored innovations in house designs, to the point of receipt of the 2009 MD ACI "Excellence in Concrete - Residential Design" for a sustainable, passive solar/natural convection, eco-friendly custom-built house in the Baltimore region. I seek opportunities to collaborate with nature, and have thus taken up sailing as an eco and challenging recreation, and embrace the design innovations of "boat" and passion of being on the water, propelled by wind, and fed by fun!! I also continue to embrace and/or educate both, my design-industry colleagues/clients and sail colleagues to ever improve and respond to our stewardship of this earthly context within which our lives are blessed to occur.
