Top Hosts tend to share a common trait: They regard the everyday challenges of hosting as opportunities, not obstacles. Psychologists call this a “growth mindset.” It’s a powerful concept—one that can help a Host provide unbeatable hospitality and increase their chances of getting bookings.

A growth mindset comes to some people naturally. To others, it’s a skill that can be learned, step by step. We asked the experts at the Masters of Scale podcast—led by Reid Hoffman (pictured above), an early Airbnb mentor and investor—for some tips and resources for getting started.

Taking your hospitality to the next level

Back when they were just starting Airbnb, Brian Chesky and Joe Gebbia learned that spending time with customers was essential to their business success. As Brian explains on the podcast, a startup adviser told them to go out and get to know Hosts one by one to gain a clear understanding of their needs.

Taking this approach can prove valuable for you, too. One way that you can better understand your guests’ needs is to spend a night in your own listing. That way, you’ll see for yourself where there’s room for improvement.

Adopting a growth mindset means being open, curious, and interested in self-improvement. Host Pam Miriti, a Community Leader and Host Advisory Board member based in Malindi, Kenya, considers herself a lifelong learner. She says she continuously seeks out insights to help take her hospitality to the next level.

“Once you list your home, be engaged and do your research,” Pam says. “What are your neighbors offering? What is your locality offering? And what are travelers looking for now? Because that’s how you grow. To make your listing stand out, you need to make a time investment.”

One passionate user can turn into many if you listen to them carefully.

Gathering useful feedback from a guest

You may have a big vision for growing your hosting business. To get there, try starting small with this easy exercise. It’s inspired by Brian’s experience starting Airbnb, which he shares in the new Masters of Scale Courses app.

Your goal is to gather insight from one customer. Here’s how: The next time a guest stays in your space, send them a note through Airbnb’s messaging tool. Explain that you’re working on improving your listing and you’d like their feedback on three specific questions when they submit their private review.

Here are the 3 questions, each one designed to unlock specific insights about growth potential:

    1. What’s one thing that made your stay at my place special?
    2. What’s one thing that could have made your stay here better?
    3. What’s one thing that I could do, or add, that would make you want to tell everyone you know about my listing?

Be open to all kinds of feedback—good, bad, and surprising. As Reid of Masters of Scale says, “One passionate user can turn into many if you listen to them carefully.” Everything you learn can fuel your growth

Using tips and tools to help your business grow

Airbnb offers Hosts many resources for learning in the Resource Center, including specific hosting tips, ideas for experiencing your space as guests do, and Host Clubs for getting and sharing local advice.

Want to keep working on your growth mindset? The Masters of Scale Courses app shares the success stories of entrepreneurs across industries. It also provides a 10-minute daily exercise on topics such as “Learning from every ‘no.’” Through September 2022, you can use the special coupon code AIRBNBHOST for a 50% discount on membership and access to the courses.

The app is available in English only.
