What you'll do

We start with a quick talk about Mexican cultural diversity and our handicrafts traditions, in which among other topics you will learn the history and the process of how one of our most amazing handcrafts is created: the Alebrijes. Then we go to the greatest part: you get to paint your own Alebrije in the same surrealistic way that our people do. A great memory from your time in Mexico!

¡This is an experience for all the family, children are welcome!

If you need a specific date or schedule please contact me :)
Other things to note
You can bring your camera, but the most important is a great attitude, desire to learn about a completely different worldview. Prepare to have great moments.

Our meeting point will be in San Angel, one of the most beautiful areas of México City. San Angel is one of the most traditional neighborhoods, the preferred place of Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera.

You can enjoy its architecture, cobblestone streets, culture, restaurants, history and shops.
San Ángel is very close to the Frida Kahlo Museum (Blue House) in Coyoacan and the Diego Rivera Studio House. During weekends you can visit the Saturday Market.

My notoriously difficult to please boyfriend and I did this together and we both loved it - in fact he liked it even more than I did! Two tips: 1. I wish I would’ve made a painting plan in advance instead of winging it - the folks who came in knowing how they wanted their finished alebrije to look came away with much better looking ones than my hodgepodge cat (who still looks really cute). 2. Book on a Saturday if you can: the artisan market in San Angel takes place on Saturdays across the street from the studio, and it is entirely worth a visit.

This experience was so incredibly special. The San Angel neighborhood takes you to a place nostalgic of very old Mexico. The host Maria meets you promptly at the door to the studio where she guides you upstairs to the art studio filled with authentic alebrijes. Maria gives a short yet concise background and history of this art form before beginning. She provides all tools and paint and there are so many beautiful colors to choose from: Neons, pastels, metallics and more! You choose your alebrije from a numerous collection, take a seat and get started while beautiful contemporary Mexican music softly plays (e.g, Natalia LaFourcade, Lila Downs, Cafe Tacuba, etc.). There are examples all around the room to help guide you if you are a novice at painting or need guidance throughout this experience. Great conversations and it was absolutely relaxing. This is a great experience towards the end of a trip to CDMX or as a meditative relaxation experience. Will come back again next time we’re in town.

Maria made this experience really special, her knowledge about the history involving the alebrijes and Mexican history gave us a great inside to the culture. She was patient and very friendly, I would recommend this to anyone interested in art and Mexican culture. We would have stayed longer if we could. 10 out of 10!!!
