Cycling through Old Holland's countryside with windmills

Amsterdam, Netherlands

Experience hosted by Hans

  1. 5 hours
  2. Hosted in English, German, and Dutch

What you'll do

You will set off in a small group by bike through Amsterdam's best-kept secret, the Westzijderveld. This area, with wet meadows that lie just above, or even below, the water table, is a paradise for meadow birds. A farm landscape with long ditches, pollard-willows and cows, turning mills and swaying reed beds is . An example of a truly typical Dutch landscape.

When you cycle over the dike, you feel the wind blowing and you look almost beyond the horizon, where the windmills are turning. You visit a working windmill, where you can experience the power of a windmill yourself. The miller will also be happy to answer your questions. This area is only accessible by bike, there are no groups of tourists here and it is therefore a unique experience.

Next, you will cycle through an authentic neighborhood with working-class houses. You will see with your own eyes how people used to live there and also pass the rich merchant houses with their beautiful decorations.

Finally you will visit the Zaanse Schans, where you will see how they make clogs and there is extensive opportunity to taste the Dutch cheese delicacy.

A great opportunity to experience the dutch landscape, history and culture. The cycling part is at an easy pace and mainly via separated bike lanes. The total cycling distance is about 8 kilometers in total.

The Westerzijderveld is now a nature reserve, here you can feel the Dutch landscape. The wind blows freely over the field with water birds, reeds, mills and beautiful views. In the time of mills this was the largest industrial area in Europe.

Hans was amazing and was extremely patient with my horrible bike riding skills and even when I wanted to give up because I was so bad at it he didn't let me and instead taught me! It was all around an amazing tour a must book!!

The tour is well worth the time and expense, may even be a must-do in Amsterdam. Hans is extremely knowledgeable and welcoming, and the views are breathtaking. We did this tour in 0 Degrees, but the harsh weather only added more character to the experience. Thanks Hans!

Hans is such a great host. He had everything prepared beforehand (bikes, clogs experience, cheese experience and chocolate experience too) so the experience was quite structured and we didn't have to rush. My wife and I had a great time. It was definitely a great experience!

I definitely would recommend this tour to all my friends and family. I really enjoyed this bike trip (at first I was a little bit anxious about riding a bike but Hans helped me a lot to gain confidence), we visited beautiful, quiet and less crowded landmarks by the countryside. An amazing and lovely experience!.
