Fajardo, Puerto Rico

Experience hosted by Percy

  1. 2 hours
  2. Hosted in English and Spanish

What you'll do

Paddle your way through a mangrove channel leading to “Laguna Grande.” There, you will meet the Pyrodinium Bahamense, a microscopic plankton capable of producing natural light at the touch of your hand!

Explore these amazing organisms up close as your eco-guides teach you about this fragile / unique ecosystem that maintains a perfect balance of life and what you can do to protect such a special place.

This 2 hour bio bay kayak tour includes interesting interpretations about the reserves fragile ecology, star constellations and a fascinating encounter with billions of bioluminescent organisms. Watch how every stroke of your paddle leaves behind a glowing swirl of blue light and fish light up their path in the water.

The adventure to Laguna Grande can only be described as magical - creating memories that will last a lifetime!

Please know that this is a natural wonder and there are occasions different un-controlable natural factors that can impact the micro-organism, causing us to experience low glow such as bright moon and changes in water temperature.

Regardless it is still a super fun kayaking adventure and an experience not to miss while in Puerto Rico! If you have questions you can message us prior to making your booking. See you soon!

Born and raised in Puerto Rico as an aspiring professional athlete, I developed a deep sense of pride and love for this island. My whole life, I have dreamed of representing Puerto Rico and its people the best way I could.
I got an education in Business Administration at Ohio Dominican University (on a baseball scholarship), while guiding aquatic adventures in the island during summer and winter breaks.
In 2006, I co-founded Kayaking Puerto Rico to fulfill my life long dream and to show the world the amazing natural treasures our island has to offer. Today, we are proud to employ over 40 team members that share our vision, hold over 25 Trip Advisor Excellence Awards and are honored to be one of Puerto Rico’s most recommended excursion outfitters.

This is an awesome tour! The plankton were a little hard to see when we went out because of mild cloud coverage, but the guides have ways to make it easier to see them! And they even had commentary on the stars, which I have never seen so many of in Puerto Rico. We went out on a particularly difficult night as there was a lot of wind, but the guides were very diligent about rounding everyone up to keep them safe.

This was wonderful trip despite the illumination was very low. The staff was great . They were funny and kind full of information. The trip was really awesome. ofcourse if the illumination was high it would have been incredible . we still had such a good time . no regrets.

The bioluminescence were beautiful. We had a moonless night with beautiful views of the starlit sky that complimented the sparkling waters. You MUST complete the LIABILITY WAIVER IN ADVANCE or they will yell at you because you don't have your own phone to complete it at the meeting point. They don't have paper copies there, so you must share their ONE device that they do not wipe off between users and 23 people needed to use it as none were aware of the waiver requirement. (HINT TO TOUR COMPANY - INCLUDE THE WAIVER IN THE REGISTRATION PROCESS!) And tip for the meeting point - you must have "Carr." at the beginning of the address or Google/Waze can't find it. This tour company meets at the RED tent. (three companies use the same meet up area). We had dinner (seafood and mofongo) at Ocean View Restaurant (Carr. Cabezas de San Juan, Fajardo, 00738) which is only a few hundred feet from the meet point. There was no "fruit" provided as listed in the description - just granola bars. "Beverages" consisted of tap water served in paper cups AFTER the kayaking.

Great experience, Noel, Francisco, David and Miguel were all wonderful. We went during a full moon which meant you couldn’t see the bioluminescence as well, however, just going through the mangroves and hearing about the constellations was enough. Absolutely beautiful area.

It was a fun trip. The moon was too bright to really see the plankton but the tarps helped catch a glimpse of the sparkles. It was definitely a good exercise. Kayaking through the canals in the dark was a lot of fun. The water was also really warm which made it nice. Definitely recommend doing it for the experience.
