What you'll do

We'll pick you up and drop you off at your Airbnb or Hotel.

There's this beautiful little hidden gem just a few hours north of Mexico City that you absolutely have to travel to — unless you're not into vividly blue, warm water hot springs!

Las Grutas de Tolantongo, or the Tolantongo caves, are a collection of hot spring pools built into a cliff in Hidalgo. The definition of a bucket list destination, they sit northeast of Mexico City in a picturesque canyon.

The pools are filled with warm, naturally mineral-infused water that's heated by the surrounding volcanic mountains. There are also caves and a tunnel to explore for a dose of adventure, a hot spring river to swim in, and a kid-friendly pool with a waterslide.

Grutas is a collection of hot springs perched right in the mountainside. The warm water is heated by surrounding volcanic mountains between the rocky canyon, complete with waterfalls for you to soak under. There are 15+ pools in the mountainside, creating the most magically dreamy infinity pool effect.

Let me start by saying Tolantongo Grutas was incredible. Such a great variety of experiences, from adventurous cave swimming to relaxing in heated pools, all in beautiful scenery. The day is a long one (6 a.m. pick-up and after 10 p.m. drop-off) and the end of our drive home was quite scary. Our driver/guide, who was otherwise a great and friendly person, started swerving lanes. When it happened several times in a row, I looked over and saw that his eyes were barely open. I started a conversation in the hopes that it would wake him up a bit, but still there was a moment where I thought we were going to hit the stopped cars in front of us. I actually yelled stop so he’d stop in time. Once the traffic cleared, he started driving really fast to get home quicker (We we’re all tired.). As we were driving on Insurgentes, he swerved again, and actually ended up in the bus lane. Going over the divider flattened his back tire, so he had to pull to the other side of the road to change the tire. At this point, I grabbed an Uber home. He said he swerved to miss a pothole and that he thought he’d be able to go into the bus lane, but I was watching the road and there were no pot holes. Overall, I enjoyed the tour and liked the guide, but today the drive home is all I keep thinking about because it was so dangerous. It definitely has overshadowed the fun day I had. It also makes me rethink going on long day tours in general. Our guide did the same tour (6 am-10 pm) on Saturday and Sunday. So, essentially he worked 32 hours in two days, 12-13 of that was driving. It’s too much and isn’t safe.

I really enjoyed this experience. My friend and I went with two guys who were our tour guides/drivers. They were super friendly, not creepy at all (which is important for two females in a foreign country, in swimsuits hours away from their hotel). They were really awesome and cool, let us wander around the park to take photos, but also very attentive to anything we needed. They were punctual and very knowledgeable about the experience/location, showing us some cool secret spots we wouldn't have seen/experienced otherwise. Great conversation and good vibes all around, I would recommend this trip to friends/family. The four drives drive is honestly not so bad (I slept), you stop on the way there and back for meal time at some authentic eateries.

Impresionante lugar.

Amazing trip! I went with my brother and it is one of the coolest things we have ever done! The tour guide knew of some areas of the park that most people don't know about and so we went to these secluded spots. We went on a weekday and there wasn't that many people. I would definitely recommend. I would love to come back and take my friends and family on this awesome trip. Marisol was super helpful in helping me switch my date around, you can tell she is cares a lot about her clients. She was very well organized.
