Sloth's watching tour & Natural Trail

La Fortuna, Costa Rica

Animal experience hosted by Roy

  1. 2 hours
  2. Hosted in English and Spanish

What you'll do

Sloth's Territory is a total trail of 1300 meters, which extends along a natural forest surrounded La Havana River, into a total property of 10 hectares.
At your arrival you will park at the Rodriguez Family's House, owners of Sloth's Territory. Their house works as reception, so it is a meet up point for waiting the start time of the activity.
Right at the moment of your arrival, you will be greeted and welcomed of one of their family (normally Oscar, Keylor or Mauricio and the ones leading the project and the activity).
During the hike, the trail allows you to enjoy a gallery forest with lush vegetation and giant tree; constituting the habitat of many species like: opossums, two and tree-toed sloths, howler monkeys, blue jeans frogs, porcupines and many birds such as toucans, motmots, tiger herons, kingfishers tanagers and much others.
But the main attraction are the sloths watching and the blue jeans frog watching. The Rodriguez Family have months of daily counting the sloths and we are sure that you will have the chance to see between 3 and 12 different sloths (from two and three toed-sloths).
The duration of this activity can be from 1,5 to 2 hours, all depends if you want to focus just on the sloths or if you are interest of watching more plants and animals.
Other things to note
The hike is done in a natural environment, that's why we can't guaranty a 100% observation of named animal in the descriptions, but by our daily monitoring we know that it is very possible.

Sloth's Territory
La Fortuna
This hike is done along La Havana River, considering the ground, it is accessible for all ages and during the activity, you will have the chance to see different kind of animal in a completely natural environment. Since it is a natural and protected environment, we are not allowed to touch any of the animals, we are not allowed to feed them. Some animals are very sensible, like frogs since they get hurt by the chemical products in our skin.

If you want to see wildlife actually in nature without going to the Osa Peninsula, this is perfect. Our group saw five sloths, a Mexican tree porcupine, and a howler monkey. Reuben was our tour guide, and he was so well-informed and passionate, as well as being genuinely excited to show us how special the fauna of this area was. Thank you to Sloth’s Territory for a fantastic experience!

One of the best things we did in Costa Rica. Our guide, Ruben, was enthusiastic and so knowledgeable. We saw two 3-toed sloths, one 2-toed sloth, and a Mexican short haired porcupine. AMAZING

We had the best experience! Ruben was our guide and not only was he funny but super informative about the sloths and animals. We were able to see 3 sloths and a baby sloth! We also saw toucans and howler monkey. They even gave us the most delicious watermelon and pineapple after the tour. Highly recommend!

Awesome experience. Booked last minute and so glad I did. Saw 6 sloths including a little baby. Very ethical tour. No touching, loud noises or anything to startle the animals. Truly get to see the animals in its natural habitat. Tour guide Ruben was amazing. So passionate and a joy to be around. Definitely book if you are in Fortuna area! Pro tip - pack bug spray!!

When I saw the signs and the size of the group (only like 8-10 but I hadn’t pictured it like that) - I was worried I had crossed my touristy threshold… but it was such a lovely experience. The guides were genuine, deeply knowledgeable, warm and funny. And we saw a handful of sloths and some other unique wildlife… definitely worth it!
