What you'll do

***In-person lessons are available to vaccinated persons only. Please send a photo of your vaccine card(s) after booking!***

You'll pick out your favorite ukulele from our selection, grab your beverage of choice from the local market and settle in to learn the basics of holding and strumming the ukulele! You will be introduced to a few simple chords that will allow you to play around 300 songs from the 50's and 60's. After rearranging those same chords, you will learn how to play hundreds more popular songs from the 70's until the present. We then learn 3 more chords and the blues, which translates to thousands more songs! You'll also learn to solo over these and a beautiful local Hawaiian tune! Each student of ours is always able to take their lesson booklet home with them after the class. This short 'n sweet lesson is also the perfect way to spend a rainy evening in one of the most beautiful places in the world, with one of the best views! (Because we know how much Kauai loves her rain...)

Lessons start at 6:00 pm, please arrive early to choose an uke & settle in! Our group lessons are talkative, informative & easy going. We are also available for more hands-on private lessons by request.

My wife, Tora Smart, is the brains of the business while I, Kirk Smart, design the lessons, the curriculum, and tell all the old jokes (but if it's your first time, they'll be fresh jokes for you!) The lessons are taught by either myself or by one of our other three fantastic teachers. I am a professional musician with decades of teaching experience and I thoroughly enjoy witnessing others get excited about learning to play an instrument! Having worked at M.I., the very respected west coast contemporary music school, I have distilled ukulele teaching to its essentials. Everyone can learn!

Fantastic first experience… I’ve been intimidated by the fact I’ve never tried to play a musical instrument but Kirk made it fun and helped me accept the clumsiness as normal! Now I really want to practice and be good at it!!!😀

When you are spending a rainy week in Hanalei we were initially just grateful to find an activity that didn't get canceled! Our extended family (9 people) enjoyed this very fun and approachable ukulele lesson. I signed everyone up to participate, ranging from grandpa with no experience to teenager with extensive ukulele and guitar, and everyone had fun. Kirk was able to make grandpa proud for successfully playing a C chord over and over, and let the teenager show off soloing pentatonic scales over the 12 bar blues. A win for everyone! Rain or shine, highly recommend.

We really enjoyed this class. You don't have to have any musical talent to join. It was easy to follow and Kirk was an excellent teacher with an entertaining and laid back personality. Fun activity for my husband and I and our ten year old son to do together.

So much fun! A must do while in Hanalei. Kirk was so much fun to learn from, and his shop is gorgeous! It was a small group but there was a lot of energy and good vibes. I felt especially comfortable knowing that everyone is required to be vaccinated. I feel like a ukulele pro now!

Such a delightful way to spend an evening. We had a blast, learned a ton, and we’re excited to play our new ukelele!

This was definitely a highlight in the entire 3 weeks of vacation in Hawaii. I am not musically inclined at all, but after 5 minutes felt like I could finally play something somewhat decent! It was trully a fun, engaging and super relaxed class. We did buy a ukelele in the end, but never ever felt any pressure whatsoever to do so. Would definitely recommend! And dont forget—BYOB.
